The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Mr. Ayuba Gufwan, has praised the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for organizing a sensitisation workshop on digital citizenship tailored for persons with disabilities.
The commendation was delivered on Gufwan’s behalf by the Director of Social Integration at the NCPWD, Mr. Lawrence Idemudia, during the event held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, in Abuja.
According to the Head of Media and Publicity at the Commission, Mr. Kigbu Ishaku, the Executive Secretary described the initiative as both timely and forward-thinking, noting that it aligns with national and global commitments to accessibility, inclusion, and sustainable development.
“As we gather here today, we are reminded of the transformative potential of information and communication technologies in advancing equality, inclusion, and independent living for persons with disabilities,” Gufwan said. “When the digital space is made accessible, it can eliminate barriers to education, employment, health, and civic participation.”
The workshop, themed “Empowering All – Advancing Digital Citizenship and Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities”, provided a platform for stakeholders—including policymakers, ICT professionals, civil society organizations, and persons with disabilities—to exchange knowledge and build strategies for advancing digital inclusion.
Gufwan urged participants to seize the opportunity to develop innovative digital solutions that ensure no one is left behind. He further emphasized NCPWD’s commitment to collaborating with the NCC and other stakeholders to make Nigeria’s digital transformation inclusive and empowering.
Key discussions at the workshop highlighted the benefits of digital citizenship, including access to information, improved communication, empowerment, digital education, and inclusive remote employment opportunities. Sessions also explored online safety, privacy, ethical use of technology, and dismantling the stigma faced by persons with disabilities.
A notable highlight of the event was the presentation of braille books by the NCC’s Director of Digital Economy, Mrs. Olatokunboh Oleyele, to the NCPWD, received on behalf of the Commission by Mr. Idemudia. Certificates of participation were also awarded to attendees.
The workshop reinforced the message that digital inclusion is central to equality and empowerment, setting the stage for broader participation of persons with disabilities in Nigeria’s evolving digital landscape.
