The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation into Tuesday’s derailment of a Kaduna-bound train, which occurred at about 11:09 a.m. between Kubwa and Asham stations along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor.

Preliminary details from the Bureau indicate that six passengers sustained injuries in the incident, though no fatalities were recorded.

Confirming the development, NSIB spokesperson, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, said a specialist “go-team” of investigators had been deployed to the site to collect evidence, interview stakeholders, and determine both the direct and underlying causes of the derailment.

“The investigation will examine the immediate circumstances and systemic issues that may have contributed to the accident. Our goal is to issue safety recommendations that will help strengthen rail transport safety and prevent future occurrences,” Oladeji stated, while extending sympathy to those injured.

Director-General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., also assured Nigerians of a thorough and independent inquiry.
“We deeply sympathise with all who sustained injuries. Investigators are already on site to establish the root cause of this derailment. Our mandate is clear: to make rail travel in Nigeria safer through a transparent and fact-driven investigation,” Badeh said.

The Abuja–Kaduna rail line, inaugurated in 2016, has faced recurring safety concerns. In March 2022, it was the scene of a deadly terrorist attack that killed eight people and led to the abduction of several passengers. Since then, questions have lingered over infrastructure maintenance, track safety, and overall operational reliability.

The latest derailment, though less severe, has again placed Nigeria’s rail system under scrutiny. Analysts say the NSIB’s findings could shape future safety measures and guide government policy on rail infrastructure.

The Bureau has pledged to provide regular updates as the investigation progresses.
