The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), in partnership with Coppercrux Limited, has launched a 5-day Awareness and Capacity Building Workshop in Port Harcourt to train youths from the South-South region on compressed natural gas (CNG) technologies and the expanding opportunities within its value chains.

The workshop, which commenced on Monday, forms part of NCDMB’s broader commitment to capacity building and aligns with the Presidential CNG Initiative—a flagship programme of the Federal Government designed to promote energy security, job creation, and environmental sustainability.

A Push for Capacity Building and Green Transition

In his welcome address, NCDMB’s Executive Secretary, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, described the programme as strategically important for the nation’s energy transition. Represented by Mr. Kingsley Neyin, Deputy Manager in his office, he urged the 50 participants to seize the opportunity, stressing that CNG offers vast untapped potential to transform lives, stimulate economic growth, and accelerate industrialisation.

“Some participants will gain employment through the skills acquired, while others could launch entrepreneurial ventures in the green energy space,” he said, encouraging them to register their competencies in the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Content Joint Qualification System (NOGIC JQS).

Day One Highlights: Understanding CNG and Energy Transition

The first presentation, delivered by Professor Aminu Bayawa Muhammad of Usmanu Danfodio University, explored the topic “Introduction to CNG and Energy Transition: Awareness, Importance and Benefits.” He examined the global shift from fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives, comparing CNG, LNG, and LPG, while underscoring CNG’s role as a practical transition fuel.

“Energy transition is a journey, not an overnight switch,” he said, listing CNG’s benefits such as environmental sustainability, lower costs, safety advantages, and enhanced engine performance.

Also speaking, Dr. Dagwon Y. Wang, Associate Professor of Accounting and Public Finance at ANAN University, provided an overview of the Presidential CNG Initiative. He noted that government’s deliberate push for CNG adoption targets clean energy, emissions reduction, job creation, and reduced transportation costs. As part of the training, participants will gain hands-on exposure at conversion centres.

Youth Opportunities in the Green Energy Sector

Highlighting the entrepreneurial prospects in the sector, Mr. Adejo Joshua, a workshop facilitator, outlined opportunities across manufacturing, conversion, servicing, and equipment supply. He identified growth potential in CNG retrofitting centres, cylinder production, eco-friendly product design, distribution networks, and IT-driven solutions.

According to him, “Green energy is more than just a climate solution; it’s a youth empowerment accelerator.”

Participants Applaud Initiative

Speaking on behalf of participants, Mrs. Eniola Shittu expressed gratitude to NCDMB and the facilitators. “This training takes us through a world of possibilities,” she said, describing it as a life-changing opportunity for young Nigerians eager to embrace the green economy.

The workshop continues through the week at La Trinite Event Hall, Eliozu, Port Harcourt, with further sessions on practical applications and opportunities in CNG value chains.
