In a bold move to modernize cargo handling and improve trade facilitation at Nigeria’s busiest airports, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commissioned an Advanced Cargo Screening X-ray Machine at the Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) PLC’s ultra-modern warehouse at the Hajj and Cargo Terminal, Lagos.

The commissioning, led by Controller of Customs, Hajj and Cargo Command, Controller M.T. Awe, marks a significant milestone in Customs’ efforts to deploy technology-driven solutions to enhance both efficiency and national security at air cargo terminals.

Driving Efficiency Through Technology

The newly installed state-of-the-art cargo screening machine is designed to drastically reduce processing times and eliminate unnecessary delays in cargo clearance. For decades, cargo screening in Nigeria has faced bottlenecks, ranging from manual procedures to cumbersome checks that often slowed down trade flows.

With the advanced X-ray machine now in place, stakeholders believe the Nigerian cargo sector is entering a new phase where cargo processing will be faster, more transparent, and more secure.

“Customs is committed to simplifying trade processes, reducing barriers for legitimate importers and exporters, and ensuring transparency in line with international best practices,” Controller Awe said during the commissioning ceremony. “This facility will enable us to detect contraband items more effectively while facilitating the swift movement of legitimate goods.”

Boosting National Security and Stakeholder Confidence

Beyond trade facilitation, the technology is also critical for safeguarding Nigeria’s national security. The machine will help Customs officers quickly identify concealed, restricted, or dangerous items that may pose threats to the nation.

Industry experts note that this installation sends a strong signal to investors and trading partners about Nigeria’s commitment to secure and efficient trade operations. Importers, exporters, freight forwarders, and other stakeholders are expected to experience greater confidence in the cargo clearance process, with fewer disputes, delays, and security concerns.

SAHCO’s Role in Aviation Cargo Modernization

SAHCO PLC, the host facility for the new equipment, has over the years positioned itself as a key driver of aviation cargo modernization in Nigeria. Its investment in ultra-modern Ground Support Equipment and warehouse facilities ensures the smooth and efficient movement of goods across all commercially operated airports in the country.

According to SAHCO management, the addition of the Customs X-ray machine further complements their vision of providing world-class cargo handling services that meet the demands of today’s globalized trade system.

Alignment with Nigeria’s Economic Agenda

The commissioning of the X-ray machine also aligns with the federal government’s economic diversification and trade expansion agenda. By reducing cargo clearance delays and securing supply chains, Nigeria strengthens its competitiveness in regional and global trade.

Experts argue that seamless cargo operations are essential for Nigeria to meet its targets of boosting exports, reducing trade costs, and attracting foreign investment into the aviation and logistics sectors.

Looking Ahead

As trade volumes through Nigeria’s airports continue to grow, the deployment of technology such as the advanced X-ray machine will be vital in ensuring that the country’s cargo system keeps pace with global standards.

Stakeholders believe that if such innovations are replicated across all major cargo entry points in Nigeria, the country will not only improve its Ease of Doing Business ranking but also become a stronger hub for regional trade in West and Central Africa.

With the commissioning of this facility, the Nigeria Customs Service has signaled that it is ready to embrace a future of efficiency, transparency, and security — a future that will reshape cargo operations and trade facilitation in Nigeria.
