Nasir El-Rufai, former Kaduna State governor, has cautioned former governors Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi against making promises to serve only one term in office, arguing that such commitments are neither credible nor realistic.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday evening, El-Rufai said governance requires more time to deliver meaningful reforms, stressing that a single four-year term is inadequate.
“On the question of people coming out and saying I will do one term, I don’t think anyone believes that. I don’t think it is right. You should not constitutionally give up what is yours,” he said.
Drawing from his experience and that of other former governors, El-Rufai argued that the time required for sustainable change in governance exceeds four years.
“As someone that has been governor for eight years, and Amaechi and Peter Obi have both been governors, they know the time it takes to make meaningful change in government. Four years is not enough,” he said.
He further urged politicians to stop making commitments they cannot uphold.
“I want to appeal to everyone to stop making these commitments of ‘I will do four years’ or ‘I will do eight years.’ Because nobody believes you. You will go in there and change the story,” El-Rufai said.
The former governor added that political focus should remain on party strategy and governance rather than premature promises about tenure. “Let us wait for our party to settle,” he concluded.
