The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General, Arsenio Dominguez, will visit Nigeria on a three-day working mission from October 2 to 4, 2025, in what is seen as a major step to deepen maritime diplomacy and highlight the country’s growing influence in regional maritime security.

Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, announced the visit during a courtesy call on the Agency’s Lagos headquarters by the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Michael Gregory Oamen.

Mobereola described the IMO chief’s trip as a recognition of Nigeria’s strides in combating piracy and maritime crime, particularly through its strong collaboration with the Nigerian Navy.

“The visit of the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command is yet another demonstration of the deep and successful partnership between NIMASA and the Navy. This synergy has consistently delivered positive results for the maritime sector and the nation at large,” Mobereola said.

He added that the IMO Secretary-General will tour Nigerian Navy installations and NIMASA facilities in Lagos, underscoring global recognition of Nigeria’s efforts in maritime security, safety, and international cooperation.

Rear Admiral Oamen commended NIMASA’s leadership for sustaining close cooperation with the Navy, stressing that the partnership remains vital to securing the Gulf of Guinea and maintaining investor confidence in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

Nigeria has recorded significant progress in maritime security in recent years, with piracy incidents drastically reduced in its territorial waters and across the Gulf of Guinea. Observers say Dominguez’s visit will further strengthen international collaboration and spotlight Nigeria’s leadership role in regional maritime reforms.
