FAAN Partners Worldwide Canine to Boost Aviation Security with Specialized Dog Handling Training

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken another bold step to strengthen aviation safety and security across Nigeria’s airports. In line with the current management’s mandate on security enhancement and manpower development, FAAN, under the leadership of its Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, has organized a specialized training course on Basic Dog Care and Handling for selected officers of the Aviation Security (AVSEC) Directorate.

The initiative, carried out in partnership with Worldwide Canine Nigeria Limited, underscores FAAN’s commitment to adopting global best practices in safeguarding passengers, facilities, and staff at the nation’s airports.

Raising the Bar on Security Standards

The training, which covered a wide range of modules, was designed to equip participants with the necessary skills to manage and care for service dogs effectively. Course highlights included:

• Roles of service dogs and responsibilities of handlers
• Canine welfare, hygiene, and grooming
• Meeting the daily needs of dogs
• Conducting physical and clinical examinations
• Understanding canine behavior and interpreting body language

These areas are considered critical in ensuring that service dogs remain in peak condition, not only for their welfare but also for their effectiveness in carrying out high-level security duties such as explosives detection, narcotics control, and patrol operations.
