How to Get Your Tax Identification Number (TIN) by Yourself: A Step-by-Step Guide Before the 2026 Deadline

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), in collaboration with the Joint Tax Board (JTB), has simplified the process of obtaining a Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individuals and businesses across Nigeria. As the government intensifies efforts to expand its tax base and strengthen financial transparency, the TIN has now become an essential requirement for all Nigerians who operate bank accounts.

From January 1, 2026, no individual or business will be able to run or maintain a bank account without a valid TIN. To avoid last-minute stress and nationwide rush, the JTB has made it possible for Nigerians to generate their TIN online, at no cost, from the comfort of their homes.

Why TIN Matters

A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique number assigned to individuals and organizations for proper identification within Nigeria’s tax system. Beyond compliance with tax laws, the TIN is increasingly becoming a gateway to financial services, business registration, government contracts, and access to official documentation.

According to FIRS, linking bank accounts with TINs will help curb financial crimes, strengthen revenue collection, and ensure that more citizens are captured in the country’s tax net.

How to Get Your TIN by Yourself

The process has been fully digitized, eliminating the need for physical visits to tax offices. Here are the steps:

  1. Download the JTB App
    • Android users: Search for the Joint Tax Board (JTB) App on the Google Play Store.
    • iPhone users: Download the app from the Apple Store.
  2. Choose the Registration Type
    • Select Individual TIN Registration if applying for personal use.
    • Select Non-Individual TIN Registration if applying for your business. For business registration, CAC incorporation documents are required.
  3. Provide Basic Information
    • Enter your Bank Verification Number (BVN).
    • Supply your Date of Birth (DOB), First Name, and Last Name.
    • Provide an active email address and other required details.
  4. Receive Your TIN Certificate
    • Once registration is complete, your TIN certificate will be delivered to your email.
    • This usually takes a few minutes to a few days.
  5. Alternative Method via Browser
    • Those who prefer not to use the app can visit the official JTB website.
    • Follow the same steps online, and within 24–72 hours, your certificate should arrive in your inbox.

Deadline and Urgent Call to Action

The federal government has set January 1, 2026, as the compliance deadline. From that date, all bank account holders in Nigeria will be required to present their TIN before accessing banking services.

Tax experts warn that Nigerians should not wait until the last moment, when servers may be overwhelmed by the rush. Previous nationwide exercises—such as the BVN and NIN registrations—showed how procrastination can lead to long queues, delays, and frustration.

Getting your TIN is free, quick, and essential. Whether you are an individual or a business owner, this unique identifier will soon be a key part of financial and business transactions in Nigeria.

Don’t wait for the last-minute rush. Secure your TIN today and stay compliant ahead of the 2026 enforcement date.
