The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, for their decisive intervention in suspending the controversial 4% Free on Board (FOB) levy earlier imposed on imports.
In a communique released on September 16, 2025, at its Secretariat in Ikeja, Lagos, and jointly signed by AON President, Alhaji (Dr.) Abdulmunaf Yunusa Sarina, FSAN (Baraden Gaya), and Vice President, Barr. Allen Onyema, the operators described the suspension as a bold and business-friendly decision that demonstrates the government’s responsiveness to the concerns of stakeholders across key economic sectors.
The association noted that had the levy been enforced, airlines in Nigeria would have been hit hard by soaring operating costs, compounding the already difficult environment in which carriers are struggling to survive. The decision, therefore, is seen not only as a relief to the aviation industry but also as a safeguard for jobs, consumer protection, and Nigeria’s competitiveness in global markets.
“AON commends President Tinubu for his unwavering commitment to creating a business-friendly environment and protecting critical sectors of the economy. This intervention reflects the administration’s understanding of the dire challenges confronting the aviation sector and its readiness to foster sustainable growth,” the statement read.
The group particularly lauded Mr. Wale Edun, describing him as a “listening Minister” who has displayed patriotism and diligence by engaging stakeholders and acting swiftly to prevent economic disruptions. AON emphasized that the suspension will also reduce inflationary pressures, help stabilize ticket prices, and protect millions of travelers from additional financial burdens.
Reflecting on this milestone, AON reaffirmed its commitment to continue working closely with the government to strengthen Nigeria’s aviation sector. The operators pledged to align their efforts with President Tinubu’s broader vision for national development and economic transformation.
“This timely suspension is not just about aviation, it is about protecting the wider Nigerian economy,” AON concluded.
The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) commend President Tinubu and Finance Minister Wale Edun for suspending the 4% FOB levy on imports, a move that safeguards the aviation industry, protects jobs, and reduces inflationary pressures while boosting Nigeria’s competitiveness.
