United Bank for Africa (UBA) has reassured the public following a fire outbreak on Broad Street, Lagos Island, which affected a commercial building that also houses one of its branches. The clarification was issued by Ramon Nasir, the bank’s Head of Media and External Relations, through his official Facebook handle.

In his post, Nasir dispelled viral reports suggesting that UBA House, Marina—the bank’s corporate headquarters—was engulfed by the fire.

“We are aware of the fire incident at a building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, which incidentally houses one of our many branches. As against reports online and on social media, the affected building is not the UBA House, Marina, the bank’s head office. We have ensured the safety and well-being of our staff and customers in the branch,” Nasir wrote.

The public clarification helped calm growing speculation on social media, where images and unverified claims about the fire had begun to spread rapidly.

UBA confirmed that all staff and customers in the affected branch were promptly evacuated, with safety protocols swiftly activated. The bank also highlighted its commitment to operational transparency, customer trust, and workplace safety.

The financial giant further urged Nigerians to rely on official communication channels during emergencies to avoid the dangers of misinformation. To this effect, the bank provided dedicated enquiry lines: its customer service email (cfc@ubagroup.com) and helpline (0700 2255 822).

By leveraging both social media and traditional channels to deliver timely updates, UBA demonstrated the importance of modern crisis management strategies in Nigeria’s financial services sector. The quick response from the bank not only doused public anxiety but also reinforced UBA’s reputation as a trusted and responsible institution.

The incident serves as a reminder of the critical role corporate communication plays in addressing emergencies in densely populated commercial districts such as Lagos Island.

UBA, through a Facebook update by its spokesman Ramon Nasir, clarified that the Lagos Island fire did not affect UBA House, Marina. The bank assured the safety of staff and customers while urging reliance on official channels to curb misinformation.
