The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of four of its staff members in a fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos, on Tuesday.
According to a statement issued by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, the victims were working at the Service’s Medium Tax Audit and Onikan Emerging Tax Office, which occupy the sixth and seventh floors of the building, when the inferno struck.
The deceased staff have been identified as Mrs. Ekelikhostse George (Assistant Director), Mr. David Sunday-Jatto (Assistant Director), Mrs. Nkem Onyemelukwe (Senior Manager), and Mr. Peter Ifaranmaye (Manager).
“It is with a heavy heart that FIRS announces the tragic loss of four of its staff members during the fire incident at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos, on Tuesday,” the statement read.
Adekanmbi explained that the Service’s security and safety officials immediately contacted the fire service upon being alerted, but by the time first responders arrived, thick smoke had already engulfed the building.
The FIRS described the incident as a devastating blow to the organization, noting that the late officers were known for their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to excellence.
“The Management and entire staff are in deep shock and sorrow over this development. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and assure them of our full support during this difficult time,” the Service stated.
The FIRS further disclosed that it is working closely with relevant agencies in Lagos to determine the cause of the fire. It also announced that a comprehensive review of safety measures would be conducted across all its offices nationwide, both in rented and owned buildings, to prevent a recurrence.
