MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has announced that it has secured approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to lease additional spectrum from T2 Mobile Limited (formerly 9Mobile), a move the company says will significantly boost network capacity and improve digital access nationwide.

According to the Management of MTN Nigeria, the lease agreement, which takes effect from October 1, 2025, covers 5MHz Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) in the 900MHz band and 15MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band for a duration of three years.

The company explained that the spectrum lease is a vital enabler for its national roaming agreement with T2 Mobile, allowing MTN to effectively manage increased network traffic generated by T2’s customer base on its infrastructure. This integrated approach—combining spectrum trading with roaming services—reflects MTN Nigeria’s broader strategy of driving collaboration, optimizing infrastructure, and advancing digital inclusion.

“We are delighted with this milestone, which aligns with our Ambition 2025 strategy. By leveraging additional spectrum resources, we are enhancing network capacity in a cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable manner. This strengthens our ability to deliver reliable, high-quality connectivity while fostering innovation and industry collaboration,” said Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria.

MTN Nigeria Management further emphasized that the initiative demonstrates the company’s commitment to shaping a more sustainable telecom ecosystem. Recent partnerships—including onboarding Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) and signing a national roaming deal with T2—are part of its efforts to broaden access to high-speed broadband and drive Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.

Meanwhile, MTN Nigeria confirmed that it will not renew its one-year spectrum lease agreement with Natcom Development and Investment Ltd (Ntel), which currently provides access to 5MHz FDD in the 900MHz band and 10MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band across 17 states. That agreement expires on November 29, 2025, in line with its contractual terms.

Reiterating its position, MTN Nigeria Management noted:

“Our strategy remains centered on investing in infrastructure, forging strong partnerships, and deploying innovative technologies that support inclusive growth and deliver superior value to Nigerians. These steps are not only about expanding coverage but also about empowering communities and businesses with the tools to thrive in a digital economy.”

With over 84 million subscribers, MTN Nigeria remains one of Africa’s largest telecom operators and continues to leverage its scale, innovation, and partnerships to ensure that every Nigerian enjoys the benefits of a modern connected life.

MTN Nigeria Management confirms NCC approval to lease spectrum from T2 Mobile, boosting network capacity, digital inclusion, and collaboration, while ending Ntel lease by November 2025.
