The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has applauded Dangote Cement Plc for championing excellence in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector following the successful certification of its Obajana Plant in Kogi State under the Integrated Management System (IMS).

The certification came after a rigorous audit process by SON experts, which evaluated the plant’s compliance with global standards in quality management, environmental sustainability, and occupational health and safety. The week-long exercise confirmed Dangote Cement’s leadership in embedding operational excellence across its systems.

SON Commends Dangote’s Benchmark Standards

Speaking on behalf of the audit team, Mrs. Ijeoma Nkechi Ohaemesi commended the company for its dedication to continual improvement.

“This certification reflects a culture of excellence that positions Dangote Cement Obajana as a pace-setter in Nigeria’s cement industry,” Ohaemesi said.

Commitment to Global Best Practices

ISO System Coordinator for Dangote Group, Mr. Sani Mikail, explained that the implementation of ISO management systems across Dangote Cement plants was approved by Group President Aliko Dangote, with guidance from Group Vice-President (Oil & Gas), Mr. Devakumar Edwin. He noted that the framework, introduced in 2010, has consistently enhanced value across the company’s operations.

Obajana Plant Director, Mr. Azad Nawabuddin, described the IMS certification as a major milestone that has improved operational processes and overall efficiency.

Similarly, Company Representative, Mr. Kommineni Suresh, highlighted that Obajana is one of the first cement factories in Nigeria to attain IMS certification, a feat that strengthens its leadership in the sector.

Driving Excellence Through Teamwork

Obajana IMS Team Lead, Ms. Akindele Temitope, attributed the achievement to strong teamwork and management’s unwavering support.

“This milestone enhances compliance, boosts quality and safety, and improves communication and business focus. It reinforces Dangote Cement’s commitment to excellence, sustainability, and global best practices,” she said.

Industry Implications

SON, Nigeria’s statutory agency for quality standards, urged other local manufacturers to emulate Dangote Cement’s approach to structured systems, noting that the certification demonstrates how Nigerian companies can align with global benchmarks to improve competitiveness and sustainability.

With this achievement, Dangote Cement Obajana not only consolidates its position as Nigeria’s largest cement producer but also sets a higher bar for manufacturing excellence in Africa.
