The Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, has reaffirmed the Commission’s readiness to deepen its collaboration with the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) in order to accelerate pension reforms and strengthen compliance with the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
Ms. Oloworaran made this pledge during a courtesy visit to the TUC President, Comrade (Engr.) Festus Osifo, at the Union’s headquarters in Abuja. She was accompanied by the Acting Commissioner, Technical, Hon. Hafiz Kawu Ibrahim, alongside other senior officials of the Commission.
Strengthening Pension Confidence
Speaking at the meeting, the PenCom DG stressed that the Commission’s priority is to protect Nigerian workers by ensuring that pension contributions are properly remitted and effectively managed. She noted that workers, through organized labour, have always played a vital role in shaping Nigeria’s pension reform journey.
“Our collaboration with the TUC is not just about enforcing compliance,” Ms. Oloworaran explained. “It is about building confidence, safeguarding workers’ future, and ensuring their years of service translate into secured retirement benefits.”
TUC Reaffirms Commitment
In his response, Comrade Osifo described PenCom’s outreach as timely and necessary, especially in addressing recurring challenges such as delayed remittances by employers. He emphasized that organized labour is committed to working with the Commission to hold employers accountable, while urging the government to lead by example in remitting pension contributions promptly.
“The welfare of workers depends heavily on the integrity of the pension system,” Osifo said. “TUC is ready to partner with PenCom to ensure the scheme delivers on its mandate and protects the dignity of Nigerian workers.”
A Reflection on Past Struggles
The meeting served as both a forward-looking agenda and a reflection on past interventions. Over the years, the TUC has consistently raised concerns about defaulting employers, while PenCom has taken decisive steps to recover unremitted contributions. These efforts, stakeholders recalled, have increased transparency, enhanced workers’ trust in the system, and strengthened Nigeria’s pension framework.
The renewed partnership highlights PenCom’s commitment to aligning with global best practices, while ensuring that Nigerian workers retire with dignity and financial security.
PenCom DG, Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, pledges deeper collaboration with TUC President, Festus Osifo, to strengthen pension reforms and ensure compliance with Nigeria’s Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
