The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken a landmark step in modernizing the nation’s aviation sector with the launch of Operation Go Cashless, a strategic initiative aimed at eliminating cash transactions at Nigerian airports. The policy, developed in partnership with leading payments platform Paystack, will take effect from September 29, 2025, starting with Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
From that date, all revenue points at the airports — including access gates, car parks, VIP and Protocol lounges — will only accept cashless and contactless payments. This bold reform will gradually phase out cash collections, ushering in an era of convenience, transparency, and efficiency for airport users.
Driving Global Standards in Nigerian Aviation
FAAN explained that the decision aligns with global aviation practices, where cashless systems have become the standard. By adopting this model, Nigeria is not only improving the passenger experience but also reinforcing revenue assurance and accountability.
“The future of airport transactions is digital, and with Operation Go Cashless, we are ensuring Nigerian airports remain globally competitive while delivering a faster, safer, and more reliable customer experience,” FAAN management stated.
Seamless Transition with Support Systems
To ease the rollout, FAAN has deployed trained brand ambassadors at terminals and access gates in Lagos and Abuja. These ambassadors will guide travelers, provide demonstrations, and answer user questions.
Additionally, passengers can now pick up a FAAN Go Cashless Card at airport access gates. Once collected, travelers can activate and fund the card by visiting www.gocashless.faan.gov.ng.
Expert Reactions
Industry experts have welcomed the initiative. Aviation analysts say the move could curb revenue leakages, enhance financial transparency, and encourage a more efficient passenger flow.
“This is a significant leap for Nigeria’s aviation industry. Cashless operations reduce bottlenecks, improve data collection, and instill confidence in both travelers and investors,” said Tunde Bamidele, aviation economist.
Digital finance specialists also highlight the role of Paystack’s technology in enabling real-time, secure transactions. “The collaboration is a win-win — FAAN boosts efficiency, while travelers benefit from convenience and transparency,” noted Michael Okafor, fintech consultant.
National Expansion Plan
FAAN confirmed that the cashless policy will expand in phases to other airports across Nigeria, reflecting its commitment to continuous improvement.
For inquiries or technical support, passengers can reach FAAN via 0700-CBS-FAAN (0700-227-3226) or email gocashlesssupport@faan.gov.ng.
With this initiative, Nigeria joins the ranks of global hubs redefining the airport experience through digital innovation, security, and customer-centric services.
FAAN, in partnership with Paystack, launches “Operation Go Cashless” at Lagos and Abuja airports effective September 29, 2025. The initiative eliminates cash payments, enhances transparency, and sets Nigeria’s aviation sector on a global digital standard.
