Nigeria’s aviation sector received a major boost at the international stage as the country secured re-election into the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council with an impressive 163 votes. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) described the outcome as a resounding endorsement of Nigeria’s growing leadership in global aviation governance.

In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, the Authority’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, praised the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, for his “dynamic stewardship and foresight”, noting that his leadership was instrumental in securing Nigeria’s position.

“This overwhelming vote of confidence from the international community reaffirms Nigeria’s strategic importance in aviation,” Kuku stated. “Under the Honourable Minister’s leadership, Nigeria has not only safeguarded its seat but also deepened its influence in shaping the future of global aviation.”

The FAAN boss stressed that the re-election provides Nigeria with a stronger platform to align domestic reforms with international best practices in safety, security, infrastructure development, and environmental sustainability.

“At FAAN, we see this renewed mandate as a call to action,” she added. “We are determined to leverage Nigeria’s place on the ICAO Council to accelerate our ambition of making Nigeria the aviation hub of West Africa. By translating this recognition into world-class airport infrastructure, smarter operations, and elevated passenger experiences, we will ensure that our airports remain gateways of national pride and regional competitiveness.”

Kuku further extended her congratulations to Egypt and South Africa, who also secured re-election to the ICAO Council, stressing that a stronger African representation at ICAO will help amplify the continent’s voice on matters of aviation safety, connectivity, and innovation.

The statement concluded with an assurance from FAAN that the Authority remains committed to the spirit of excellence that has earned Nigeria the trust of 163 ICAO member states. By signing the statement, Henry Agbebire underscored FAAN’s unified stance in reaffirming Nigeria’s role in global aviation and its dedication to stakeholders and the traveling public.
