The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has officially launched Operation Go Cashless, a landmark initiative that introduces cashless and contactless payments at Nigerian airports. The program was unveiled at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, marking a major step toward transparency, accountability, and service efficiency in the aviation sector.

The launch was presided over by FAAN’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, who was represented by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Henry Agbebire. Partnering with Paystack, FAAN is piloting this innovation in Lagos and Abuja—the country’s busiest international gateways—before extending it nationwide.

Speaking on behalf of Mrs. Kuku, Agbebire emphasized FAAN’s resolve to embrace technology as a driver of reform.

Operation Go Cashless is more than a digital upgrade; it is a statement of our commitment to transparency, accountability, and innovation in service delivery. We are determined to eliminate revenue leakages and provide passengers with seamless payment experiences that meet global best practices,” he said.

He further highlighted the passenger-centric value of the initiative.

With this system, passengers and service users no longer need to worry about cash-related challenges. From accessing services to settling charges, everything can now be done swiftly and securely. This is a win for both FAAN and the traveling public.

Reflection on Broader National Agenda

Beyond its immediate benefits for airport operations, Operation Go Cashless aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader digital economy and financial inclusion agenda. The Federal Government has repeatedly stressed the importance of leveraging technology to strengthen governance, improve service delivery, and build confidence in public institutions.

By introducing contactless digital payments, FAAN is not only modernizing airport management but also directly supporting the government’s vision of a transparent, technology-driven economy. This move complements Nigeria’s national drive toward cashless transactions, championed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and demonstrates how public institutions can adopt innovative solutions to boost efficiency and trust.

Looking back, Nigeria’s airports have long struggled with outdated cash-based systems that slowed operations and created gaps in accountability. Today, the shift to cashless payments marks a turning point—a deliberate embrace of digital transformation that reflects the aspirations of a modern Nigeria.

Analysts believe that once the system is fully rolled out nationwide, it will strengthen FAAN’s revenue profile, improve user experience, and enhance Nigeria’s global aviation competitiveness. More importantly, it signals to the world that Nigeria is serious about creating smarter airports, smarter governance, and a smarter economy.

FAAN launches Operation Go Cashless at Lagos and Abuja airports with Paystack, advancing Nigeria’s digital economy agenda by promoting transparency, accountability, and seamless passenger experiences through contactless payments.
