The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has officially launched Operation Go Cashless, a groundbreaking digital payment initiative designed to reshape airport transactions, enhance passenger convenience, and strengthen revenue transparency across the nation’s airports.
The launch ceremony, held at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, brought together top aviation stakeholders, technology partners, the media, and FAAN’s management team. Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, the Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, Mr. Henry Agbebire, underscored the significance of the project in Nigeria’s aviation reform journey.
“Today, we are not just launching a new payment system; we are fundamentally reshaping the experience at our airports and reinforcing our unwavering commitment to accountability, transparency, and excellence,” Agbebire declared, representing the FAAN MD/CEO.
Cashless and Contactless Across Airports
With this initiative, physical cash collection will be phased out across FAAN-operated revenue points, including airport access gates, car parks, and VIP/protocol lounges. The rollout begins at Nigeria’s busiest international gateways — the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Passengers can now expect faster, more secure, and seamless transactions, with cash-handling delays eliminated. To ensure inclusivity, FAAN has introduced the Go Cashless Card, available at all access gates in Lagos and Abuja. Passengers are encouraged to collect, activate, and fund their cards for easy access.
In addition, trained brand ambassadors have been deployed across terminals and access gates to assist travelers with onboarding, provide demonstrations, and answer questions.
Revenue Growth and Accountability
The FAAN boss emphasized that the new system is not just about convenience but also about accountability. By migrating from cash to electronic transactions, every payment will be traceable, secure, and transparent, enhancing FAAN’s ability to ensure revenue assurance and reduce financial leakages.
Mrs. Kuku, through her representative, commended the Director of Commercial and Business Development, Ms. Adebola Agunbiade, and her team for spearheading the project, noting that the innovation is expected to triple FAAN’s revenue in the coming months.
Support from Government and Partners
Agbebire also acknowledged the unwavering support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has consistently prioritized aviation sector reforms, and the encouragement of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, who has championed innovations and digital transitions within the industry.
He further highlighted FAAN’s strategic partnership with Paystack, the technology company powering the cashless system, ensuring the initiative aligns with global best practices in aviation management.
Nationwide Rollout
While Lagos and Abuja airports are the first beneficiaries, FAAN confirmed that the cashless system will be gradually expanded to all airports nationwide in a phased rollout.
“This is a new dawn for FAAN — a dawn defined by technology, driven by efficiency, and dedicated to serving Nigerians better,” Agbebire concluded.
