Record load factors and strong international traffic mark a robust peak summer season for airlines worldwide.

Global air travel continued its upward trajectory in August 2025, as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported a 4.6% year-on-year increase in passenger demand. This growth, measured in revenue passenger kilometers (RPK), underscores the resilience of the aviation sector despite ongoing economic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions.

Total capacity, measured in available seat kilometers (ASK), rose 4.5% year-on-year, while the passenger load factor (PLF) reached a record 86.0%—the highest ever recorded for August. International travel drove the surge, posting a 6.6% increase in RPK, with a load factor of 85.8%. Domestic markets also saw growth, albeit more modestly, with a 1.5% rise in RPK and a PLF of 86.3%.

“August’s 4.6% growth confirms a record-breaking peak northern summer travel season. Airlines are filling more seats than ever, operating at an unprecedented 86% load factor. As carriers continue to expand capacity by 3.4% in October, the aerospace manufacturing sector must resolve supply chain challenges to meet rising demand,” said Willie Walsh, IATA Director General.

Regional Highlights – International Markets:

  • Asia-Pacific: 9.8% increase in demand, driven by China (+11.8%) and Japan (+12%). Load factor: 85.1%
  • Europe: 5.3% demand growth; load factor stable at 87.9%
  • North America: 1.8% growth; load factor declined slightly to 87.5%
  • Middle East: 8.2% increase; load factor at 83.9%
  • Latin America: 9.0% increase; load factor at 84.7%
  • Africa: 7.1% increase; load factor at 79.7%

Domestic Markets:
Domestic traffic contributed 13% of global RPK growth, down from 25% last year. Notable domestic growth came from Brazil (+12.7%) and Japan (+6.0%), while U.S. domestic demand fell marginally.

As airlines continue to navigate evolving market dynamics, August 2025 highlights both strong consumer demand and the critical importance of efficiency across operations. The record load factors demonstrate a robust recovery and renewed confidence in air travel worldwide.
