The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) is gearing up to join the global community in celebrating the 2025 World Standards Day, an annual event dedicated to recognizing the critical role of international standards in shaping safer, sustainable, and more resilient societies.

This year’s celebration, themed “Shared Vision for a Better World: Spotlight on SDG 17 – Partnership for the Goals,” underscores the importance of collaboration, innovation, and mutual support among nations in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In a statement released by Mrs. Talatu Ethan, SON’s Director of Corporate Affairs, the organization announced that its flagship event, the “Walk for Standards,” will take place on Saturday, October 11, 2025, starting at 8:00 a.m. from SON’s corporate office in Ogba, Lagos.

“This year’s World Standards Day is a rallying point for all Nigerians to reflect on how standards contribute to our daily lives and the global effort toward sustainable development,” Ethan stated. “Our ‘Walk for Standards’ event is both symbolic and practical—it encourages public participation while promoting the message that standards are the backbone of progress, innovation, and safety.”

The walk will begin at SON’s Ogba office and proceed through Adeniyi Jones Avenue, Aromire Street, Allen Avenue Junction, Ikeja Bridge by Awolowo House Roundabout, Computer Village, and Oba Akran Avenue, before returning to the starting point.

According to Mrs. Ethan, the initiative is designed not only to raise awareness about the importance of standards but also to promote physical well-being, networking, and partnerships among individuals, corporate entities, and public institutions.

“Participation is free, and we invite everyone—Nigerians and foreigners alike—to join this movement. The walk represents our shared responsibility to build a more sustainable and standardized society,” she added.

The Director-General of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, is expected to lead the exercise alongside SON management, industry stakeholders, and representatives from government agencies, private organizations, and civil society.

Ethan recalled that the 2024 edition, which focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its relationship with standardization, attracted wide participation and sparked important discussions about the future of technology and global safety benchmarks.

This year, the emphasis on SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals reinforces SON’s commitment to fostering collaboration across borders and sectors. The organization believes that strong partnerships—rooted in shared standards—are fundamental to solving global challenges such as climate change, poverty reduction, and industrial innovation.

The World Standards Day, celebrated annually on October 14, honors the coordinated efforts of experts around the world who develop voluntary international standards—the frameworks that ensure products, services, and systems remain safe, reliable, and consistent. SON’s early commemoration with the “Walk for Standards” continues a tradition of public engagement that aligns Nigeria with global best practices in standardization and sustainability.

“The theme for this year’s celebration—‘Shared Vision for a Better World’—reminds us that standards are not just technical documents. They are tools of cooperation that enable progress and unity in a world striving for a balanced future,” Ethan emphasized.

As Nigeria positions itself for sustainable industrial growth, the 2025 World Standards Day represents a call to action for citizens, policymakers, and businesses to embrace standardization as a key driver of economic resilience and global competitiveness.

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) will commemorate the 2025 World Standards Day with a “Walk for Standards” on October 11, focusing on SDG 17 – Partnership for the Goals. The event aims to raise awareness on the importance of global standards in achieving sustainable development and fostering collaboration across industries.
