Madam Esene, aged 64, passed away on Monday, October 6, 2025, at the National Hospital, Abuja, after a prolonged illness. A native of Ubiaja in Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State, she retired from the Federal Ministry of Information before joining True Verdict Online Newspaper, where she continued to contribute meaningfully to journalism until her passing.

In a condolence statement signed by the Council’s Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the NUJ FCT Council extended its heartfelt sympathy to the deceased’s family, colleagues, and members of NAWOJ FCT Chapter, describing her as a “dedicated and passionate media professional whose contribution to the advancement of women journalists and ethical journalism will never be forgotten.”

“The NUJ FCT Council is deeply pained by this loss. Madam Stella was a pillar of strength and inspiration to many journalists, particularly the younger generation. Her leadership, courage, and commitment to the ideals of truth and fairness in journalism remain exemplary,” the statement read.

During her tenure as NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Stella Okoh Esene was widely admired for her uncommon passion and advocacy for gender equity, using her platform to mentor young female journalists and promote professionalism across newsrooms in the nation’s capital.

Her demise, according to the NUJ FCT Council, comes at a time when her experience and wisdom were most needed in shaping the future of journalism in Nigeria, particularly efforts geared toward inclusivity and ethical reportage.

“Stella Esene’s legacy lives on through the many women she empowered and the standards she set for ethical journalism,” the statement added.

The NUJ FCT Council prayed for the repose of her soul and asked God to grant her family, friends, and colleagues the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Funeral arrangements, according to the family, will be communicated in due course.
