The Knights of St. John International and Ladies Auxiliary, Lagos Grand Commandery, marked a historic milestone as they celebrated 30 years of unbroken service to God and humanity, with Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, OFR, presiding as Chairman of the Occasion.
The grand event, held at the Catholic Church of the Ascension, Ikeja, Lagos, brought together a distinguished assembly of leaders, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State (ably represented), His Royal Majesty, Oba Rilwan Babatunde Akiolu, the Royal Father of the Day (represented), and Chief Nnia Nwodo, former President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who delivered the Keynote Address.
The three-day celebration, themed “Celebrating 30 Years of Service to God and Country,” runs from October 10 to 12, 2025, and features a series of activities including liturgical celebrations, tributes, award presentations, colloquia, and cultural displays, all designed to honour the enduring commitment of the Knights and Ladies who have dedicated their lives to faith, discipline, and community service.
In his inspiring address, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, OFR, who also serves as the Founder and CEO of United Nigeria Airlines, commended the Knights and Ladies for their unwavering devotion to the Church and society.
“The enduring strength of the Knights of St. John International rests upon its deep spiritual foundation,” Prof. Okonkwo said. “For 30 years, you have stood as soldiers of Christ, translating faith into tangible works of service. I charge you not to rest on your past achievements but to embrace the future by mentoring the next generation and ensuring that this noble mission continues to shine as a beacon of hope and faith. Our presence here is a collective affirmation that service to humanity is the very best work of life.”
He further emphasized the importance of catechism as the cornerstone of Catholic faith, urging the Church to preserve its doctrinal purity while adapting evangelization methods to meet the needs of modern and future generations.
The celebration also showcased the rich traditions of the Catholic fraternal order, highlighting the principles of faith, hope, charity, and fraternity that define the Knights of St. John International.
As the Lagos Grand Commandery commemorates its 30th anniversary, the event serves as both a moment of reflection and renewal — a call to deepen spiritual commitment, expand humanitarian service, and inspire younger Catholics to uphold the timeless virtues of discipline, unity, and brotherhood.
