In a renewed push to deepen transparency, corporate accountability, and fiscal discipline across Nigeria’s public and private sectors, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) held a strategic parley with the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation (OAuGF) on Monday in Abuja.

The meeting brought together key leaders from both institutions, including the Director-General of the SEC, Dr. Emomotimi Agama; the Auditor-General of the Federation, Shaakaa Kanyitor Chira; SEC’s Executive Commissioner for Corporate Services, Samiya Hassan Usman; and Directors from the Office of the Auditor-General — Ogwe Uchechukwu and Abbey Oweiziarerebo.

During the high-level engagement, both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting financial integrity, efficient audit processes, and compliance with international reporting standards across all government entities and publicly listed companies.

Dr. Agama emphasized that closer collaboration between the SEC and the Auditor-General’s office is vital for sustaining investor confidence and ensuring Nigeria’s capital market remains transparent and globally competitive. He noted that the SEC’s ongoing reforms are geared toward strengthening regulatory oversight, curbing corporate malfeasance, and supporting the government’s economic transformation agenda.

In his remarks, Auditor-General Shaakaa Kanyitor Chira commended the SEC for its proactive stance in promoting good governance and financial accountability. He expressed readiness to partner more closely with the Commission to institutionalize efficient auditing standards and ensure that financial disclosures from government-linked institutions meet the highest ethical benchmarks.

Also speaking, Samiya Hassan Usman, SEC’s Executive Commissioner for Corporate Services, underscored the importance of harmonizing audit practices with capital market reporting requirements, describing the partnership as a “timely step toward strengthening Nigeria’s financial ecosystem.”

The Directors from the Auditor-General’s office — Ogwe Uchechukwu and Abbey Oweiziarerebo — highlighted the need for continuous capacity-building initiatives and knowledge sharing between both agencies to enhance compliance monitoring and reduce financial infractions within the system.

At the end of the meeting, both parties agreed to set up a joint technical working group that would develop frameworks for audit synergy, information exchange, and risk management. The collaboration, they noted, will further institutionalize good governance and uphold Nigeria’s reputation as an emerging investment destination driven by transparency and sound fiscal management.

The Abuja engagement reflects a broader national effort to align Nigeria’s financial regulatory architecture with international best practices, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s vision for prudent financial management and sustainable economic growth.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation, led by Dr. Emomotimi Agama and Shaakaa Kanyitor Chira, met in Abuja to strengthen collaboration on financial oversight, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria’s public and private sectors.
