In a landmark move to institutionalize operational excellence and environmental responsibility, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has officially unveiled its Integrated ISO Policy, a transformative framework designed to entrench quality, safety, and sustainability across all airports under its management.

The policy launch, held on Monday, October 21, 2025, at FAAN headquarters, signaled the Authority’s renewed commitment to aligning its operations with global aviation best practices.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, represented by the Director of Human Resources and Administration, Dr. Luqman Emiola, formally unveiled the policy document before top management, directors, and staff members drawn from various departments.

In her keynote presentation, the Director of Special Duties, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, emphasized that the ISO audit process serves as a mirror of FAAN’s service standards, reflecting its operational efficiency, customer satisfaction culture, and dedication to environmental stewardship.

According to her, the newly integrated policy merges two globally recognized standards — ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System) and ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System) — into a single operational framework. The goal, she said, is to ensure that service quality, operational safety, and environmental sustainability become inseparable elements of FAAN’s day-to-day operations.

“This policy helps FAAN measure not only the quality of services we deliver but also how responsibly we carry out those services,” Orah noted. “It is a holistic approach that places the customer, the environment, and operational excellence at the center of our vision.”

FAAN’s Certification Journey Nears Completion

The management disclosed that the Authority has already achieved 70 percent progress in the ISO certification process. External auditors are scheduled to arrive in November 2025 to assess compliance levels and address any identified gaps ahead of full certification by December 2025.

In his goodwill message, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Henry Agbebire, commended the Managing Director and the Directorate of Special Duties for leading the initiative. He reaffirmed FAAN’s unwavering commitment to embedding a culture of quality assurance, safety, and sustainability across its network of airports.

“FAAN’s ISO journey represents not just a procedural milestone but a cultural transformation. It is about redefining how we manage people, processes, and performance to ensure we meet and exceed global standards,” Agbebire said.

Documented Excellence as a Core Principle

Mrs. Kuku, through her representative, reiterated FAAN’s operational principle that, “If it is not documented, it is considered not done.” She explained that the integrated ISO policy provides the Authority with a consistent and verifiable documentation system that serves as the foundation for internal audits across all directorates.

This system, she added, ensures that every operational activity — from airfield management and passenger facilitation to environmental compliance — is traceable, measurable, and accountable.

“This policy gives us a living, working document — one that guides how we deliver services, protect our environment, and ensure safety while maintaining international credibility,” Kuku said.

Commitment to Sustainability and Community Impact

Beyond quality management, the integrated ISO policy underscores FAAN’s broader environmental and social objectives. The Authority reaffirmed its dedication to:

  • Protecting the environment through responsible airport operations.
  • Supporting host communities with sustainable engagement programs.
  • Providing a safe, inclusive, and enabling workplace for its employees.

These commitments, according to management, reflect FAAN’s broader strategic vision to operate as a world-class airport management organization that balances profitability with environmental responsibility and social impact.

In his closing remarks, the General Manager, Special Duties, appreciated the FAAN Management team for their continued support, emphasizing that the benefits of the ISO certification go far beyond compliance.

“This certification will position FAAN as a benchmark for aviation excellence in Africa,” he said. “It will enhance investor confidence, improve passenger experience, and boost Nigeria’s reputation in global aviation.”

About FAAN’s ISO Integration

FAAN’s Integrated ISO Policy aligns with international standards that define the benchmarks for quality assurance (ISO 9001) and environmental management (ISO 14001). Once certified, FAAN will join the league of leading airport authorities globally recognized for safety, efficiency, transparency, and sustainability in operations.

The policy also strengthens Nigeria’s aviation regulatory environment, supporting the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) objectives on safety and environmental management, while reinforcing the government’s vision to make Nigeria a regional aviation hub.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has launched an Integrated ISO Policy combining ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards to enhance quality, safety, and sustainability across Nigerian airports. Full certification is expected by December 2025.
