In a decisive move to bolster pension awareness and ensure sustainable retirement planning, the National Pension Commission (PenCom), in collaboration with the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), hosted a landmark sensitization workshop in Kano State, drawing pensioners, government officials, workers’ representatives, and key stakeholders from across the region.
The workshop aimed to deepen understanding of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), Nigeria’s pioneering social security framework, which now manages over ₦25 trillion in pension assets. By engaging directly with stakeholders, PenCom sought to bridge knowledge gaps, clarify misconceptions, and highlight the benefits of early and consistent participation in the CPS.
Officials from PenCom emphasized that the ongoing reforms are focused on enhancing transparency, promoting timely payment of pensions, expanding coverage to informal sector workers, and mobilizing domestic capital for national development projects. “Our commitment is to ensure every Nigerian retires with dignity,” PenCom stated, underscoring that pensions are not just financial instruments but vital tools for fostering socio-economic stability.
The collaboration with NSIWC further reinforced a unified approach toward managing salaries, wages, and retirement benefits, ensuring that federal and state workers are well-informed and actively engaged in securing their post-service futures. Representatives of labour unions and pension fund administrators praised the initiative, describing it as “a model of effective stakeholder engagement that other states should emulate.”
Experts attending the workshop highlighted the evolution of the CPS since its introduction in 2004, noting its role in not only providing financial security for retirees but also in driving long-term economic growth through strategic investment of pension assets in infrastructure and development projects. They observed that such outreach programs are crucial in fostering a culture of retirement planning and financial literacy across Nigeria.
Reflecting on the impact of the workshop, one attendee remarked, “PenCom is not only protecting our future but also empowering us with knowledge to make informed decisions about our retirement.” The workshop concluded with a call for continuous collaboration among government agencies, employers, and pension administrators to ensure that Nigeria’s workforce is adequately prepared for retirement, reinforcing the nation’s vision of inclusive development.
