The Director-General/Chief Executive of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to driving Nigeria’s industrial competitiveness and consumer protection through enhanced collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI).

Dr. Okeke made the commitment during a high-level courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, in Abuja. He was accompanied by the Chairman of the SON Standards Council, Hon. Yahuza Ado Inuwa, while the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Amb. Nura Abba Rimi, joined the meeting.

During the visit, the SON DG emphasized that the country’s push for economic diversification and stronger non-oil exports requires a modern, science-driven standards ecosystem. He said SON is ready to deepen technical cooperation with the Ministry to improve product quality, curb the influx of substandard goods, and position Nigerian industries for global competitiveness.

“Nigeria’s industrial growth depends on rigorous standards,” Dr. Okeke said. “This partnership with FMITI will strengthen quality assurance, boost export readiness, and support manufacturers as they innovate and expand.”

Standards Council Chairman, Hon. Yahuza Ado Inuwa, said the Council is committed to aligning Nigeria’s standards development and enforcement processes with international best practices. He noted that a stronger policy-standards synergy is necessary for sustaining investor confidence and protecting consumers.

Minister Oduwole welcomed the delegation and commended SON for its continued efforts to safeguard the nation’s quality landscape. She highlighted the Ministry’s priority areas, including improving business regulation, promoting industrial growth, and leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to expand Nigeria’s export opportunities.

“Standards are central to market access and industrial excellence,” the Minister noted. “FMITI will continue to work closely with SON to ensure Nigerian products meet global expectations and compete effectively in regional and international markets.”

Permanent Secretary Amb. Nura Abba Rimi reiterated the Ministry’s support, stressing that policy stability, strict standard enforcement, and coordinated institutional engagement are essential to achieving Nigeria’s industrialization goals.

The meeting ended with a shared commitment to deepen collaboration on standardization, certification, industrial coordination, export readiness, and consumer protection. Industry analysts say the renewed engagement between SON and FMITI is timely, especially as Nigeria scales reforms to curb substandard imports, strengthen manufacturing, and enhance its reputation in global value chains.

SON DG Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke and Standards Council Chairman Hon. Yahuza Ado Inuwa meet Industry and Trade Minister Dr. Jumoke Oduwole to strengthen Nigeria’s quality infrastructure, enhance industrial standards, and boost export competitiveness.
