FAAN Flags Off Two-Day Leadership Retreat to Drive Modernisation, Governance Reforms and Airport Competitiveness

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has opened a crucial two-day Board Retreat themed “Future-Proofing FAAN: Leadership, Modernisation and Strategic Renewal,” marking a strategic push to strengthen governance, deepen institutional capacity, and reposition Nigeria’s airports for global competitiveness.

The retreat, which began today, assembled key aviation stakeholders including the Chairman of the FAAN Board, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Board Members, Executive Directors and senior management personnel. The high-level gathering is designed to chart a transformative roadmap for FAAN’s operational, infrastructural and financial future.

Representing the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, was the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Yakubu Adam Kafarmata, who delivered the Minister’s message of confidence and encouragement.
“May your deliberations be productive, and your outcomes transformative for FAAN, for the aviation sector, and for Nigeria,” he stated.

Also present were Distinguished Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, and Hon. Festus Akingbaso, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, representing the Chairman. Their participation highlighted bipartisan legislative support for FAAN’s reform initiatives.

Driving Institutional Renewal and Future-Ready Infrastructure

In his address, Dr. Ganduje applauded FAAN for initiating the retreat, describing it as a critical step toward reshaping the Authority’s long-term vision. He expressed optimism that the retreat would deliver robust, actionable insights capable of strengthening FAAN’s leadership and operational efficiency.

FAAN’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku, noted that the retreat provides an opportunity to reflect on past achievements, identify persistent challenges, and set a new direction for a modern, innovative and globally competitive airport system for Nigeria.

The retreat’s agenda focuses on:

  • Strengthening synergy between the Board and Management
  • Enhancing governance and clarifying FAAN’s strategic priorities
  • Assessing operational, infrastructural and financial realities
  • Designing a modernisation and innovation blueprint
  • Aligning with ministerial directives and national aviation development goals

According to FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the participation of the Board, the Ministry and National Assembly leadership underscores a unified national commitment to strengthening aviation infrastructure, improving institutional resilience and enhancing service delivery across all airports.

Actionable Resolutions Expected

FAAN is expected to announce a set of actionable resolutions at the end of the retreat. These will form a strategic roadmap aimed at accelerating modernisation, driving operational excellence and solidifying FAAN’s leadership role in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
