Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, today officially commissioned the newly built and upgraded terminal at Gen. Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Maiduguri, marking a historic milestone for aviation in the region.
The commissioning ceremony saw the President cutting the ribbon in the presence of prominent national and regional leaders, including Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, Executive Governor of Borno State; Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda, Executive Governor of Katsina State; Hon. Festus Keyamo SAN, FCIArb (UK), Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development; and Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
The terminal upgrade project represents a strategic partnership between the Government of Borno State and FAAN, under the supervision of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development. It is designed to enhance passenger experience, increase operational efficiency, and strengthen the region’s position as a key aviation hub in northeastern Nigeria.

The event attracted dignitaries, aviation stakeholders, and industry experts from across the nation, all gathering to witness this significant achievement that reflects Nigeria’s commitment to modernizing its airport infrastructure and boosting regional economic development.
Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, FAAN MD/CEO, highlighted that the upgraded terminal incorporates world-class facilities aimed at ensuring safety, comfort, and efficiency for travelers, while promoting Borno State as a destination for business and tourism. Governor Zulum commended the Federal Government’s commitment to the northeast, describing the project as a “transformative investment in the state’s socio-economic growth.”
