The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has recorded a significant milestone in its ongoing aviation safety reform with the aerodrome certification of Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Kano, and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.
The certification, issued by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), confirms that both airports now fully comply with the safety, operational, and regulatory standards prescribed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This development strengthens Nigeria’s compliance profile and reinforces FAAN’s commitment to operating airports that meet global best practices.
Industry sources said the certification followed rigorous audits and inspections covering airside and landside operations, runway and taxiway conditions, airfield lighting systems, emergency response and rescue capabilities, security frameworks, and the implementation of Safety Management Systems (SMS).
FAAN officials noted that achieving aerodrome certification is a critical benchmark for airport operations, as it demonstrates an airport’s ability to consistently manage safety risks while maintaining efficient service delivery. They stressed that the process is continuous, requiring sustained compliance, routine monitoring, and periodic surveillance by the NCAA.
The certification of the Kano and Port Harcourt airports is also seen as a boost to passenger confidence and airline operations, particularly for international and regional traffic. Aviation analysts say certified aerodromes enhance operational reliability, reduce safety risks, and improve Nigeria’s competitiveness as an aviation hub in West and Central Africa.
FAAN reiterated that the milestone reflects sustained investments in infrastructure upgrades, staff capacity development, and closer collaboration with regulatory and security agencies. The Authority added that more airports across the country are currently undergoing the certification process as part of a broader strategy to modernise Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure.
As Nigeria seeks to expand air connectivity, grow cargo operations, and attract increased private sector participation, FAAN said it remains committed to prioritising safety, security, and operational excellence across all federal airports in line with the Federal Government’s aviation development agenda.
