Nigerian Breweries Plc (NB Plc) has reinforced its long-standing commitment to sustainable agriculture and inclusive growth with a landmark intervention targeting smallholder farmers in Bauchi State, backed by a €2.25 million (about ₦4 billion) investment from the HEINEKEN Africa Foundation (HAF).
Implemented in partnership with the Foundation for Sustainable Smallholder Solutions (FSSS), the three-year programme is designed to directly support 14,000 smallholder farmers and indirectly benefit over 70,000 others across rural communities. The initiative focuses on helping farmers transition from subsistence farming to resilient, market-oriented agriculture capable of delivering sustainable income and long-term food security.

Speaking during the programme’s engagement event in Bauchi, the Sustainability Manager at Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Chukwuemeka Aniukwu, said the project reflects NB Plc’s belief that empowering farmers is central to building resilient communities and sustainable value chains.

According to Aniukwu, the intervention goes beyond financial support to address structural challenges faced by smallholder farmers, including limited access to quality inputs, knowledge gaps and weak market linkages.

“Our goal is to equip farmers with the skills, resources and market access they need to thrive, not just to survive. By promoting regenerative agriculture, we are improving productivity while protecting the environment and ensuring that farming remains viable for future generations,” he said.

The programme delivers a holistic package of support, including regenerative agricultural practices that improve soil health and climate resilience, access to improved inputs, structured training sessions and stronger connections to markets. These measures are expected to boost yields, stabilise incomes and enhance farmers’ ability to withstand climate and economic shocks.

Aniukwu noted that the Bauchi project aligns with Nigerian Breweries’ broader sustainability strategy, which places farmers at the heart of its responsible sourcing and environmental stewardship agenda. He added that partnerships such as the one with HAF and FSSS demonstrate how private sector leadership and development expertise can combine to deliver measurable, community-level impact.

As Nigeria continues to contend with food inflation, climate change and rural poverty, stakeholders say the initiative offers a replicable model for agricultural transformation—one that links sustainability, livelihoods and economic growth.

Beyond the numbers, the success of the project will be measured by improved farmer incomes, healthier ecosystems and stronger rural communities—affirming that supporting farmers today is essential to growing Nigeria’s future.

Nigerian Breweries Plc, backed by the HEINEKEN Africa Foundation, is investing €2.25m in a three-year regenerative agriculture programme in Bauchi to support over 70,000 smallholder farmers, boosting incomes, resilience and food security across rural communities.
