Nigerian Airways Retirees Seek PTAD’s Intervention Over Pending Pension Onboarding

The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and dignity of pensioners, as retirees of the defunct Nigerian Airways renewed their call for support over unresolved pension onboarding issues.

The appeal was made during a meeting held recently, in 2025, when the Executive Secretary of PTAD, Mrs. Tolulope Odunaiya, met with representatives of the Association of Airways Retired Workers of Nigeria (AARWN) to discuss lingering pension-related concerns affecting former employees of the liquidated national carrier.

In a statement issued by Olugbenga Ajayi, MNIPR, Head of the Corporate Communications Unit at PTAD, the Directorate disclosed that the central focus of the engagement was the proposed onboarding of Nigerian Airways pensioners onto the federal pension payroll. Many of the affected retirees were already pensioners before the airline was liquidated but remain excluded from regular pension payments.

The AARWN delegation was led by its Chairman, Mr. Onuh Stephen, alongside Mr. Ahmed Sulu Gambari, who both spoke on behalf of the retirees, outlining the hardship and uncertainty faced by members due to prolonged delays in pension verification and onboarding.

Responding, Mrs. Odunaiya expressed empathy with the retirees and acknowledged the legitimacy of their concerns. She reaffirmed PTAD’s dedication to ensuring that all pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme are treated with fairness, respect, and transparency.
However, the PTAD Executive Secretary clarified that the Directorate operates strictly within the limits of its statutory mandate. She noted that PTAD does not have the legal authority to independently verify or onboard new pensioners without formal directives from the appropriate government authorities.

She further advised the association to sustain its ongoing engagement with relevant authorities to obtain the necessary approvals required for the onboarding of its members who were bona fide pensioners of Nigerian Airways prior to its liquidation.
Mrs. Odunaiya assured the delegation that PTAD remains open to collaboration and will promptly act in line with the law once all statutory requirements and approvals are fulfilled.

The meeting highlights the continued advocacy by Nigerian Airways retirees for inclusion on the pension payroll, as well as PTAD’s position on the legal and procedural framework guiding pension administration in Nigeria.

Nigerian Airways retirees have appealed to the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) for support over delayed pension onboarding, as PTAD reiterates its commitment to pensioners while emphasizing statutory limitations.
