NCC Board Sets Governance and Digital Economy Agenda at Uyo Induction Retreat

The newly constituted Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) last week held its induction retreat in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, marking a strategic start to its stewardship of Nigeria’s telecommunications regulator.
Chaired by Chief Idris Olorunnimbe, the retreat provided a critical platform for the Board to engage with Management on the Commission’s strategic priorities and to reaffirm the NCC’s role as a catalyst for the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s digital economy.

Designed as both a reflective and forward-looking forum, the retreat featured seasoned experts who led in-depth and practical sessions on law, governance, and regulatory leadership. Mrs. Yetunde Akinloye guided participants through a comprehensive review of the Nigerian Communications Act (2003), reinforcing the legal foundations that define the Commission’s mandate and regulatory authority.

In his session, Paul Usoro, SAN, shared insights on effective board governance and oversight, with emphasis on accountability, strategic direction, and the importance of maintaining a clear boundary between Board responsibilities and management execution within a national regulatory environment.

Bringing an international perspective to the discussions, Professor Hyacinth Nwana examined the evolving role of telecommunications regulators amid rapid technological change. He highlighted the need for regulatory agility, global awareness, and forward planning as the industry navigates digital transformation, innovation, and convergence.

Professor Fabian Ajogwu, OFR, SAN, concluded the expert-led sessions by grounding the Board on core corporate governance principles, stressing transparency, ethical leadership, and sound decision-making as essential pillars for institutional credibility and long-term impact.

Participants described the sessions as rigorous and candid, with deliberations consistently anchored on strengthening governance, enhancing regulatory credibility, and delivering tangible outcomes for consumers, industry stakeholders, and the wider digital economy.

The Uyo induction retreat underscored the NCC Board’s commitment to strategic leadership and effective oversight, setting a clear tone for advancing Nigeria’s communications sector and supporting national digital economy objectives.
