The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) on Wednesday, January 1, 2026, formally transitioned to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), marking a historic turning point in Nigeria’s tax administration landscape.
The unveiling ceremony, held on the first day of the new year, showcased the folding of the FIRS identity into the newly branded NRS, a move widely interpreted as a strong signal of institutional rebranding and strategic repositioning.
Industry observers describe the transition as more than a name change, noting that it reflects the federal government’s broader push to modernise revenue collection, expand the tax base, and align Nigeria’s fiscal institutions with global best practices.
Before today, the agency operated under the name Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), a designation it carried for decades as the country’s primary tax authority responsible for administering and collecting federal taxes.
With the emergence of the Nigeria Revenue Service, expectations are high that the rebranded institution will deliver improved efficiency, enhanced transparency, and stronger digital-driven revenue mobilisation in line with Nigeria’s evolving economic realities.
