The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to flag off an independent and wide-ranging assessment of competition in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, in a move aimed at strengthening fair market practices, protecting consumers, and supporting long-term industry sustainability.

The development was disclosed in a statement by the Head of Public Affairs at the NCC, Mrs. Nnenna Ukoha, who said the planned study will commence barring any last-minute changes.

Backed by Law and Regulation
According to the Commission, the assessment is being undertaken pursuant to Section 92 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 and the Competition Practices Regulations (CPR) 2007, which empower the NCC to periodically review market structure and competition levels across the telecoms industry.

The study will involve the engagement of an independent private consultant mandated to deliver an objective, data-driven evaluation of competitive dynamics within the sector.
Guiding Future Regulatory Actions

The NCC said findings from the assessment will serve as a critical tool for shaping future regulatory interventions.

“Outcomes of the study are expected to guide appropriate regulatory actions aimed at strengthening fair competition, protecting consumer interests, stimulating investment, and advancing Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda in line with long-term industry sustainability,” the Commission stated.

Analysts believe the review could influence future decisions on market dominance, pricing practices, infrastructure sharing, and entry conditions for new players in the industry.

Broad Stakeholder Consultation Planned

The Commission stressed that the appointed consultant will adopt an inclusive approach, engaging widely with licensed telecom operators, industry associations, and consumer advocacy groups.

Stakeholders will be encouraged to submit data, market insights, and policy perspectives, ensuring that the assessment reflects the realities of Nigeria’s fast-evolving telecommunications landscape.

According to the NCC, this collaborative process is designed to deliver a robust, transparent, and credible analysis that balances operator sustainability with consumer protection and innovation.

Implications for Nigeria’s Digital Economy
The planned competition audit comes at a critical time, as Nigeria intensifies efforts to expand broadband access, improve service quality, and accelerate the growth of its digital economy.

Industry watchers say the NCC’s initiative could help create a more level playing field, boost investor confidence, and reinforce Nigeria’s position as one of Africa’s largest and most dynamic telecoms markets.

The Nigerian Communications Commission plans an independent competition audit of Nigeria’s telecoms sector to strengthen fair play, protect consumers, and support digital economy growth.
