The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have reinforced their commitment to closer institutional collaboration aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s financial system and strengthening economic governance.
The renewed partnership came to the fore on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, when the Governor of the CBN, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, received the Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Olanikpekun Olukoyede, at the CBN Head Office in Abuja.
The high-level meeting focused on deepening inter-agency cooperation to enhance financial system stability, improve regulatory oversight and intensify efforts to combat financial crimes. Both institutions explored strategies for improved information sharing, policy coordination and joint enforcement actions to address emerging risks within the financial sector.
Speaking during the engagement, Mr. Cardoso reiterated the CBN’s resolve to work closely with the EFCC to ensure transparency, accountability and resilience within Nigeria’s financial architecture. He noted that sustained collaboration between regulators and law enforcement agencies is critical to maintaining investor confidence and supporting long-term economic growth.
In his remarks, EFCC Chairman Mr. Olukoyede stressed the importance of synergy between the Commission and the apex bank, noting that closer cooperation would strengthen the EFCC’s capacity to prevent, detect and prosecute financial crimes. He added that such partnerships are vital to protecting the integrity of the financial system and advancing national economic objectives.
The meeting underscores a renewed focus on strategic collaboration between key public institutions as Nigeria steps up efforts to promote sound economic governance, strengthen financial regulation and safeguard the country’s financial system from abuse.
