The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for directing the immediate reopening of the Samiya International Border in Kebbi State, a key trade gateway linking Nigeria to the Republic of Benin.
In a statement, NACCIMA’s National President and Chairman of the Organised Private Sector of Nigeria (OPSN), Engr. Jani Ibrahim, mni, OON, described the move as a timely and strategic policy decision poised to enhance regional economic cooperation and revitalize legitimate commercial activities along the border corridor.
The presidential directive was officially announced during the visit of Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, to the Nigeria Customs Service Area Command in Birnin Kebbi, signaling a renewed focus on trade facilitation, border efficiency, and economic growth.
NACCIMA highlighted that the reopening is supported by strengthened compliance measures, modern cargo-monitoring technology, improved transit controls, and firm directives to curb smuggling and regulatory violations. The association noted that faster cargo clearance timelines and coordinated inter-agency oversight reflect a balanced approach that safeguards national security and revenue while supporting trade.
“The reopening of Samiya Border is not just a policy decision; it is a development opportunity,” Engr. Ibrahim said. “Well-regulated and technologically equipped border posts improve livelihoods for border communities, strengthen agricultural and commodity value chains, boost Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and informal traders, enhance regional food security, and facilitate ECOWAS trade integration.”
NACCIMA emphasized that the border reopening sends a clear message that Nigeria is committed to functional, technology-driven border operations that promote economic growth, competitiveness, and sustainable development.
The association reaffirmed its readiness to partner with government agencies and stakeholders to ensure that the policy translates into lasting trade expansion, inclusive growth, and strengthened regional cooperation across West Africa.
