Nigeria marked a significant milestone in aviation safety as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Western and Central African Office (WACAF) Regional Office Safety Team (ROST) successfully concluded its technical assistance mission in the country.
At a high-profile debriefing ceremony held at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Corporate Headquarters, the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Capt. Chris Najomo, described the mission as a constructive and rigorous engagement that has further strengthened Nigeria’s readiness ahead of the ICAO International Coordinated Validation Mission (ICVM) scheduled for 15th–22nd April 2026.
Capt. Najomo emphasized that the recommendations from the ICAO mission would be swiftly incorporated into an accelerated action framework, featuring clearly defined timelines, measurable outcomes, and reinforced coordination across all directorates. “Our commitment is to ensure that Nigeria not only meets but exceeds ICAO safety standards,” he stated, underlining the Authority’s proactive stance on aviation safety.
Highlighting the collaborative nature of the exercise, Capt. Najomo expressed gratitude to ICAO WACAF, the Banjul Accord Group Aviation Safety Oversight Organisation (BAGASOO), Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), and all NCAA personnel for their professionalism and unwavering dedication.
“The mission has sharpened institutional focus, strengthened operational systems, and will ultimately elevate Nigeria’s aviation safety performance,” Capt. Najomo added, noting the value of sustained collaboration among domestic and international stakeholders.
Representing the ICAO WACAF team, Kebba Lamin Jammeh lauded Nigeria’s responsiveness and the high level of cooperation demonstrated by NCAA technical directorates and partner agencies.
He described the engagement as a model for regional aviation safety collaboration, emphasizing that such proactive participation positions Nigeria as a regional leader in safety oversight and compliance.
The mission, spanning several weeks, included comprehensive assessments of Nigeria’s aviation safety systems, operational protocols, and regulatory frameworks. Its successful conclusion signals a positive trajectory for the country as it prepares for the ICVM audit, an internationally recognized benchmark for aviation safety and compliance.
With these strides, Nigeria continues to reinforce its commitment to international aviation standards, ensuring safer skies and positioning the nation as a pivotal hub in Africa’s rapidly evolving aviation sector.
