The management of Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), operator of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), has commenced a strategic review of its operations following an unprecedented passenger surge recorded during the 2025 Detty December festivities.
The review comes after what has been described as one of the busiest single-day traffic volumes in the terminal’s history, particularly on December 13, when passenger movement peaked beyond projected capacity.
The Chief Operating Officer of BASL, Mr. Remi Jibodu, disclosed that the extraordinary spike has triggered a comprehensive reassessment of operational systems, infrastructure resilience, and passenger processing capacity.
Speaking during the SEVEN WONDERS OF NIGERIA 3.0 Zoom meeting themed “The Role Aviation Played in the Success of Detty December 2025 and Lessons Learnt,” Jibodu said the experience has redefined the importance of aviation within Nigeria’s festive economy.
Aviation at the Heart of Festive Economy
According to Jibodu, MMA2 evolved from being just a domestic terminal into a central hub powering economic and social activities across the country during the Yuletide season.
“On December 13, the passenger numbers we witnessed were unprecedented,” he said. “It was a defining moment for us operationally. That day alone demonstrated how critical aviation has become in facilitating Nigeria’s festive economy.”
He noted that the terminal became an epicentre of movement for thousands of travellers, particularly members of the diaspora returning home for the holidays, cultural celebrations, weddings, concerts, and tourism events.
Detty December — a term widely used to describe the surge in entertainment, tourism, and travel activities in Nigeria during the festive period — has increasingly relied on the aviation sector to move people efficiently across major cities.
A Real-Time Stress Test
Jibodu explained that while the surge highlighted growth and opportunity, it also served as a real-time stress test for MMA2’s infrastructure and operational systems.
From check-in counters and security screening to baggage handling and boarding gates, every segment of the passenger journey experienced intense pressure.
However, he emphasized that the experience provided invaluable lessons.
“It showed us where we must scale, where we must digitize further, and where collaboration with airlines and regulatory agencies must be strengthened,” he added.
Strategic Reforms Underway
In response to the historic spike, BASL has initiated a series of reforms aimed at future-proofing MMA2 for sustained growth:
Expansion and reconfiguration of passenger processing areas to ease congestion.
Deployment of additional security and screening equipment to reduce queue times.
Technology-driven enhancements to improve turnaround efficiency.
Strengthened coordination with airlines for better schedule management during peak seasons.
Increased manpower deployment during high-traffic periods.
Jibodu stressed that the objective is not merely to respond to seasonal spikes but to prepare MMA2 for consistent year-round growth.
Positioning for 2026 and Beyond
Industry observers note that Nigeria’s domestic aviation market is entering a new growth phase, driven by population expansion, rising middle-class travel demand, diaspora inflows, and expanding entertainment and tourism ecosystems.
The Detty December 2025 experience, Jibodu said, has underscored aviation’s expanding role as an economic enabler — connecting commerce, culture, and community.
“As we look ahead to 2026, we are not just planning for another festive season,” he stated. “We are positioning MMA2 to handle a new level of demand that reflects Nigeria’s evolving travel culture.”
With the strategic overhaul underway, BASL appears determined to ensure that record-breaking passenger traffic becomes a benchmark for improved service delivery — rather than a strain on infrastructure.
For MMA2, the Detty December rush was more than a seasonal spike. It was a signal of transformation in Nigeria’s aviation landscape — and BASL is moving swiftly to meet the moment.
