In a strategic move to strengthen domestic connectivity, ValueJet Airlines has announced that it will operate daily flights between Lagos and Owerri starting March 23, 2026. The airline, which currently runs three weekly flights on the busy corridor, said the expansion responds to increasing passenger traffic and the growing demand for flexible travel options.
The Lagos–Owerri route is a crucial link connecting Nigeria’s commercial hub with the South-East region, facilitating business, education, and family travel. With the upgrade to seven flights per week, passengers will enjoy improved scheduling flexibility, reduced travel constraints, and more reliable air services.
Captain Majekodunmi, ValueJet’s Managing Director, explained that the decision aligns with the airline’s broader mission to enhance domestic aviation connectivity and support economic and social linkages nationwide. He said, “Daily operations will provide seamless and consistent travel options for professionals, entrepreneurs, families, and other travellers who rely on this route. This step reflects our commitment to making air travel more accessible and dependable across Nigeria.”
Economist Celestine Ukpong noted that the expansion could have broader economic implications, stating, “Increasing flight frequency on high-traffic routes helps align airline capacity with passenger needs, stimulates commerce, and strengthens regional integration. Reliable air travel encourages investment and supports businesses that depend on efficient transportation links.”
Peter Adebayo FCA, an aviation finance specialist, added, “ValueJet’s move is strategic. Daily services are likely to boost passenger loyalty, improve operational efficiency, and position the airline as a leader in Nigeria’s domestic market. It also reflects the growing demand for domestic air travel and the importance of modernizing flight schedules to match passenger expectations.”
For regular commuters, the daily flights promise easier travel planning, while business travelers will benefit from enhanced flexibility during the workweek. Families and leisure travelers will gain more weekend and weekday options, reducing dependency on limited flight days.
Industry observers emphasize that the expansion reflects a growing trend among Nigerian carriers to increase frequency on high-demand routes to meet passenger expectations and improve competitiveness. Analysts predict that ValueJet’s strengthened presence on the Lagos–Owerri corridor will boost operational efficiency, reinforce brand loyalty, and contribute to Nigeria’s broader economic growth by enabling commerce and tourism.
