In a dramatic late-night intervention, the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, flew from Abuja to Lagos on Monday following a fire outbreak at Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA).
Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), confirmed that Minister Keyamo arrived at the airport at approximately 11:50 p.m., joining FAAN’s Managing Director and the management team who were still actively coordinating emergency response efforts to contain the blaze.
While on-site, Minister Keyamo commended FAAN personnel and first responders for their swift and professional handling of the incident. “The prompt activation of emergency protocols by FAAN and first responders was instrumental in safeguarding lives, containing the fire, and minimizing disruption to airport operations,” he said.
He directed FAAN management, in collaboration with relevant aviation agencies, to conduct a thorough joint inspection of Terminal 1 by 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, 24 February 2026. The assessment aims to evaluate the full extent of the damage, guide recovery operations, and ensure that the terminal meets all operational and safety standards before resuming normal passenger services.
“The Federal Government remains fully committed to ensuring the safety of travelers, protecting critical infrastructure, and restoring airport operations with minimal disruption,” Minister Keyamo emphasized.
FAAN assured travelers that emergency measures were effectively deployed and that the situation is under control. The Authority also encouraged passengers to monitor updates as recovery efforts continue.
Experts note that the swift response by airport authorities highlights the importance of preparedness and coordination in mitigating the impact of unexpected incidents on Nigeria’s busiest international gateway.
