The Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (NATCA) has commended aviation authorities and frontline personnel for what it described as a “highly professional and coordinated” response to the recent emergency incident at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, which temporarily disrupted flight operations.
In a detailed statement signed by its President, Edino Ilemona Amos, the association informed the public and the global aviation community that the incident necessitated swift emergency response measures, including the temporary closure of Nigeria’s airspace around the airport to guarantee safety.
Emergency Evacuation and Decisive Airspace Management
According to NATCA, Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) working at the Control Tower were safely evacuated from the 9th floor using a crane in a carefully coordinated rescue operation.
The association noted that NAMA, in line with global aviation safety standards and its statutory responsibility for managing Nigeria’s airspace, took the proactive decision to temporarily close the airspace serving MMIA. This measure, NATCA emphasized, was necessary to prevent operational risks and maintain the highest level of safety.
Following the successful evacuation and activation of contingency protocols, NAMA coordinated the orderly reopening of the airspace. Normal flight operations were restored within the hour — a development NATCA described as a testament to the agency’s operational preparedness.
Seamless Relocation and Technical Brilliance
Despite the disruption, operations resumed swiftly due to the rapid deployment of alternative infrastructure.
Air Traffic Controllers and other operational staff immediately relocated to the airport’s Fire Tower to continue providing air navigation services without compromising safety.
Simultaneously, Air Traffic Engineers redeployed essential communication radios and technical equipment to the temporary facility with speed and precision, ensuring uninterrupted coordination with aircraft in Nigerian airspace.
The Directorate of Air Traffic Services (DATS) also played a critical role by:
Holding inbound flights bound for MMIA,
Rerouting aircraft where operationally required, and
Ensuring a safe and structured resumption of traffic flow.
NATCA said the seamless collaboration across departments demonstrated the depth of professionalism and resilience within Nigeria’s air navigation services system.
Minister’s Swift Intervention Draws Praise
In a notable show of leadership, the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development flew into Lagos immediately after the airspace was reopened to assess the situation firsthand.
NATCA described the Minister’s action as courageous, proactive, and symbolic of hands-on governance. According to the association, the visit underscored the government’s solidarity with aviation professionals and commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive of NAMA was equally commended for decisive leadership, prompt decision-making, and effective crisis coordination that ensured the emergency was contained without injury or prolonged disruption.
“Unsung Guardians of Nigeria’s Skies”
NATCA reserved special recognition for Air Traffic Controllers nationwide — particularly those stationed at MMIA — describing them as unsung guardians of Nigeria’s airspace.
The association highlighted their calmness under pressure, technical expertise, and unwavering dedication to duty as critical factors that prevented escalation of the situation.
Pilots operating within the Kano Flight Information Region (FIR) and other aviation stakeholders were also appreciated for their cooperation and adherence to instructions during the emergency.
Call for Urgent Federal Action
While praising the exemplary crisis response, NATCA warned that the incident once again exposed underlying infrastructure and safety vulnerabilities within Nigeria’s control tower system.
The association urged the Federal Government to take immediate steps to strengthen aviation infrastructure by:
Conducting a comprehensive safety and structural audit of all Control Towers across Nigeria in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices.
Fast-tracking the completion of the Safe Tower Project at MMIA to provide a modern, resilient, and secure working environment for operational personnel.
NATCA stressed that preventive investment in safety infrastructure is essential to protect the flying public and sustain confidence in Nigeria’s aviation system.
