The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has commissioned a cutting-edge Clinical Skills and Simulation Laboratory at Bayelsa Medical University (BMU), marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s effort to strengthen healthcare education and local capacity building.
The state-of-the-art facility, inaugurated on Friday at BMU’s Main Campus, is fully equipped with high-fidelity adult and pediatric patient simulators, laparoscopic training systems, obstetric trainers, advanced life support mannequins, consultation cubicles, and modern audio-visual learning systems. University officials emphasized that the laboratory allows students to “practice, make mistakes, and perfect life-saving skills in a zero-risk environment before interacting with real patients.”
At the commissioning ceremony, NCDMB Executive Secretary, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative. “Capacity building is not just about oil and gas; it is about ecosystems,” he said, noting that sectors such as healthcare, education, engineering, and logistics are deeply interconnected with the oil and gas industry. He stressed that “simulation-based learning is the global standard in medical education, enabling students to develop critical clinical skills, improve decision-making, and build confidence in a controlled, safe environment.”
Represented by Mr. Ene Ette, Acting Director of Planning, Research and Statistics at NCDMB, Ogbe commended BMU management and partner organizations for their collaboration and shared vision. He described the laboratory as a “strategic investment in human capital and a practical demonstration of how policy can translate into measurable impact.”
BMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Dimie Ogoina, described the commissioning as more than just an unveiling of a building or equipment. “This is about securing the future of healthcare in Bayelsa, the Niger Delta, and Nigeria at large,” he said. Reflecting on his A.S.P.I.R.E. Agenda—an initiative to position BMU as a globally recognized center for medical education, research, and innovation—he added, “Today, we are seeing that vision come to life.”
Professor Ogoina expressed gratitude to the NCDMB for providing advanced patient simulators, CPR mannequins, and essential surgical and diagnostic kits, highlighting the facility’s role in reducing medical errors, improving patient safety, and developing skilled indigenous healthcare professionals.
“We are not just training doctors for today; we are nurturing digital-age physicians capable of competing globally,” he said.
The Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor Philip Eyimina, lauded NCDMB for its foresight, noting that the laboratory played a critical role in BMU’s recent accreditation verification. “This facility enables our students to master essential competencies—history taking, physical examination, suturing, intravenous access, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, obstetric skills, and emergency response—while developing critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills,” he said.
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, the Visitor to the University, praised the NCDMB for the investment, describing the facility as “remarkable” and a testament to BMU’s potential as a leading medical institution. Represented by the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, the Governor reaffirmed the State Government’s support for BMU’s pursuit of academic excellence and international recognition.
In a goodwill message, BMU Pro-Chancellor, Professor Tarilah Tebepah, thanked NCDMB for the support, emphasizing that achieving global recognition for the University requires significant technology, equipment, and funding. She encouraged continued collaboration to help BMU sustain its growth and educational excellence.
The event concluded with a guided tour of the facility’s advanced training units, including a Virtual Reality Station, Pediatric and Airway Management Stations, ECG and Patient Monitoring Station, IV Fluids Administration and Cannulation Station, and a Demonstration Hall—underscoring the University’s commitment to producing highly skilled, globally competitive medical professionals.
