The 20th Anniversary Edition of the 2025 Silverbird Man of the Year Awards marked a defining moment for Nigeria’s aviation sector, as the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, was conferred with the prestigious Minister of the Year 2025 Award.

The high-profile ceremony, held on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at the iconic Eko Hotels & Suites Convention Center in Victoria Island, Lagos, drew an array of political leaders, business executives, diplomats, and industry stakeholders from across the country.

Keyamo’s recognition comes amid sweeping reforms in Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem, particularly in the areas of financial transparency, regulatory discipline, infrastructure upgrade, and digital transformation of airport operations.

Cashless Directive: A Bold Revenue Reform

In his acceptance speech, the Minister used the platform to reinforce one of the Federal Government’s most consequential aviation reforms — the full automation of revenue collection across federal airports.

“Everybody who uses Federal Airports should go and get their cards immediately,” Keyamo declared. “All Federal airport revenue points have now gone fully cashless to block leakages and improve revenue generation for the Federal Government.”

The directive signals a zero-tolerance stance on revenue leakages and informal cash transactions that have historically undermined transparency within the airport system. Under the new framework, all payments at federal airport revenue points — including toll gates, service charges, and other official collections — are processed electronically.

Industry observers describe the move as a structural reset designed to:

Eliminate manual cash handling

Improve real-time revenue tracking

Enhance accountability across agencies

Strengthen federal earnings from aviation

Analysts note that Nigeria’s aviation sector has long struggled with revenue inefficiencies despite growing passenger traffic. The cashless transition is therefore being viewed as a strategic intervention aimed at aligning the sector with global aviation financial management standards.

Reform Agenda Gains National Recognition

Beyond revenue reforms, Keyamo’s tenure has been marked by assertive policy decisions, stricter regulatory enforcement, and renewed investor engagement in airport concession discussions.

Stakeholders say the Minister’s approach reflects a broader federal reform agenda centered on fiscal discipline and institutional strengthening.

The Silverbird recognition adds public validation to those reforms, especially as the aviation sector plays an increasingly important role in Nigeria’s economic diversification strategy.

Other Notable Honourees

The ceremony also celebrated several distinguished Nigerians whose leadership has shaped national development.

The coveted Silverbird Man of the Year Award was presented to Bassey Edet Otu, Governor of Cross River State, while Dave Umahi received the Extraordinary Personality of the Year honour.

Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer awards were also presented to prominent figures across business, governance, and public service sectors, underscoring the awards’ legacy as one of Nigeria’s most respected recognition platforms.

Aviation Sector at a Turning Point

With the full rollout of the cashless airport revenue system now in effect, attention shifts to ensuring implementation compliance and measuring the revenue impact.

Experts believe that if properly enforced, the policy could significantly increase internally generated revenue from federal airports while improving operational transparency.

For passengers and airport users, the directive introduces a new era of digitised transactions — one that places accountability and efficiency at the center of Nigeria’s aviation operations.

As the aviation reform momentum continues, the Minister’s award may well be remembered not just as a ceremonial honour, but as a marker of a pivotal phase in the transformation of Nigeria’s airport management system.

Festus Keyamo was named Minister of the Year 2025 at the Silverbird Awards in Lagos, declaring all federal airport revenue points fully cashless to enhance transparency and improve government revenue generation.
