As the world commemorates International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), Captain Alex Badeh Jr., has praised the increasing role of women in safeguarding Nigeria’s transport sector and advancing safety investigations across multiple modes of transportation.
Badeh made the remarks in a statement marking the global celebration, noting that International Women’s Day has evolved into a powerful global platform that recognises the achievements of women while advocating for greater inclusion, opportunity, and leadership across industries.
According to him, women are making significant contributions within the Bureau and across Nigeria’s transport safety ecosystem, particularly in aviation, rail, marine, and road transportation.
He said female professionals at the agency continue to demonstrate exceptional dedication in conducting safety investigations, analysing complex operational risks, and contributing to recommendations that help prevent future accidents.
“At the Bureau, we witness the impact of women every day. They play critical roles in the work we do to strengthen transport safety across the country. From leading investigations to analysing complex safety issues, women are helping shape recommendations that prevent future occurrences,” Badeh said.
The NSIB chief emphasised that the work of accident investigators is highly technical and requires strong analytical skills, professionalism, and commitment—qualities that women in the organisation consistently demonstrate.
The Bureau, which serves as Nigeria’s independent accident investigation authority for aviation, rail, marine, and road transport occurrences, relies on the expertise of multidisciplinary professionals, including engineers, safety analysts, data specialists, and field investigators.
Badeh noted that the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day reinforces the importance of creating opportunities and support systems that allow women to thrive in technical and leadership roles.
He stressed that empowering women within institutions strengthens operational efficiency, decision-making processes, and the overall effectiveness of safety systems.
“When women are given opportunity, responsibility, and support, the entire system grows stronger. Inclusion is not just a social goal; it is a strategic necessity for building resilient institutions and safer transport systems,” he said.
Reaffirming the Bureau’s commitment to gender inclusion, Badeh said the NSIB remains focused on creating an enabling environment where women can develop professionally, expand their technical expertise, and take on leadership responsibilities within the organisation.
He added that the Bureau will continue to support policies and initiatives that encourage women to participate actively in safety investigation and other specialised roles in the transport sector.
Badeh also used the occasion to commend women working across Nigeria’s broader transport industry, including pilots, engineers, marine experts, railway professionals, safety officers, and transport administrators.
Their dedication, he said, continues to play a vital role in strengthening the nation’s transport safety framework and protecting lives and infrastructure.
“To the women working across our transport systems, we recognise your dedication and celebrate your invaluable contributions to keeping our nation safe,” he stated.
The observance of International Women’s Day provides an opportunity for governments, institutions, and organisations worldwide to reflect on progress made toward gender equality while renewing commitments to empower women across all sectors of society.
For Nigeria’s transport sector, stakeholders say greater inclusion of women in safety-critical roles will remain essential to improving operational standards, strengthening accident investigation processes, and enhancing public confidence in transport systems.
