The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has moved to clarify misconceptions surrounding its proposed firefighters’ training programme, following concerns raised by the Nigerian Aviation Fire and Safety Association (NAFSA) in a recent media report. The report, published by The Guardian on March 11, 2026, suggested that the training model may not adequately equip Airport Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) personnel.
In response, Henry Agbebire, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, stressed that the programme is not an online-only course. Instead, it is a hybrid or blended training model that combines virtual learning, classroom-based instruction, and hands-on practical drills over a six-week period.
“The hybrid approach reflects modern global training practices and is designed to strengthen the competence and operational readiness of our ARFF personnel,” Agbebire said. “While some theoretical modules are delivered through virtual platforms to enhance learning efficiency and reach more personnel, practical exercises, live simulations, and emergency drills remain central to the programme.”
FAAN emphasized that the programme is fully compliant with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 14 standards and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Advisory Circulars, which mandate practical, hands-on sessions in all firefighter training courses.
The Authority explained that adopting a hybrid model allows it to train a larger number of personnel efficiently, while maintaining operational coverage across airports nationwide. “Our goal is to ensure safety is never compromised, even as we modernize training and expand participation,” Agbebire added.
Experts note that hybrid training programmes have become an industry standard globally, allowing aviation organizations to combine cost-effective virtual learning with rigorous on-field drills, enhancing both knowledge retention and practical competence.
FAAN concluded by reaffirming its commitment to continuous skill development, operational excellence, and safety across Nigeria’s airport network, while ensuring that all firefighters are equipped to respond effectively to emergencies.
FAAN clarifies its hybrid firefighters’ training programme, combining online, classroom, and practical drills to strengthen ARFF personnel skills, fully complying with ICAO and NCAA safety standards.
Furthermore, FAAN addresses concerns over its firefighters’ training programme, highlighting a six-week hybrid model integrating virtual learning and hands-on simulations to enhance airport safety and operational readiness.
