In a landmark recognition of women’s impact on Nigeria’s maritime sector, Dr. Pius Akutah, Executive Secretary and CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), has praised the significant contributions of women to the nation’s shipping, logistics, and maritime ecosystem. His remarks coincided with the global celebration of International Women’s Day 2026.

In a statement, Dr. Akutah highlighted that women’s growing involvement in the maritime sector—from port administration and shipping operations to logistics, regulatory compliance, freight forwarding, and marine law—has been instrumental in driving innovation, efficiency, and institutional excellence.

“Women in Nigeria’s maritime industry have consistently demonstrated resilience, professionalism, and leadership. Their contributions extend beyond operational roles, influencing policy decisions, strengthening stakeholder engagement, and shaping regulatory frameworks that enhance trade and maritime activities nationwide,” Dr. Akutah said.

He noted that, historically, the maritime sector has been male-dominated, but women have broken barriers and redefined leadership standards. Their increasing participation in decision-making roles is helping to drive reforms and promote institutional excellence, enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in global maritime trade.

Dr. Akutah also emphasized that empowering women is both a social responsibility and a strategic imperative for the sustainable growth of the maritime sector. Women working across Nigeria’s ports, shipping companies, logistics firms, regulatory agencies, and maritime institutions continue to demonstrate exceptional professionalism, often balancing demanding careers with family responsibilities while significantly contributing to sector development.

“As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we honour the women who inspire future generations. Your impact is immeasurable, and your dedication remains essential to building a more innovative, inclusive, and future-ready maritime industry,” he added.

The NSC boss further reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to policies and initiatives that promote gender inclusion, professional development, and equal opportunities. He called on stakeholders across the maritime and logistics sector to continue supporting initiatives that empower women, encourage leadership development, and remove structural barriers limiting full participation.

“The future of Nigeria’s maritime sector depends on harnessing the talents, ideas, and leadership of both men and women working together to build a stronger, globally competitive industry,” Dr. Akutah concluded.

This statement underscores the vital role of women as key drivers of Nigeria’s maritime growth, highlighting the sector’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and sustainable development.
