A fatal gas tanker explosion in Sangotedo, Lagos, has left one person dead, two others injured, and several businesses destroyed, raising fresh concerns over road safety and the movement of heavy-duty vehicles within urban corridors.

The incident occurred at Ologuro Bus Stop, directly opposite the Total Filling Station in the Sango-Tedo axis, a rapidly developing commercial and residential hub along the Lekki-Epe corridor.

Confirming the development, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said its emergency response unit—popularly known as the Shark Team—was immediately deployed to the scene following distress calls from residents and passersby.

According to the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, preliminary investigations revealed that the disaster was triggered when a tipper truck, reportedly moving at high speed, crashed into a gas tanker from behind.

“The impact of the collision resulted in a fire outbreak that rapidly escalated, engulfing nearby structures,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.

Casualties and Emergency Response

The LASEMA boss confirmed that the driver of the tipper truck, identified as an adult male, died instantly from the force of the crash. Two adult female victims sustained minor injuries and were promptly treated at the scene by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

Emergency responders administered first aid before stabilising the victims, preventing further complications.

The swift intervention of responders, including operatives from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, played a critical role in containing the situation and preventing additional casualties.

Extent of Damage

Eyewitness accounts and official reports confirmed that the resulting inferno engulfed at least four roadside shops, destroying goods and property worth millions of naira. Traders and shop owners in the vicinity were left counting their losses as flames tore through the structures.

Authorities also disclosed that the tanker’s contents remained trapped within the vehicle, necessitating careful handling during ongoing recovery operations to avoid secondary explosions or environmental hazards.

Fire Contained, Recovery Ongoing

Emergency teams worked in coordinated efforts to bring the fire under control, successfully preventing it from spreading to adjoining buildings, including nearby residential and commercial facilities.

“Through a collaborative response, the fire has now been curtailed, and recovery operations are ongoing,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.

The area has since been cordoned off to facilitate safe evacuation of debris and ensure public safety.

Rising Safety Concerns

The tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with reckless driving, particularly by operators of heavy-duty vehicles transporting hazardous materials.

Safety experts have repeatedly warned that overspeeding, poor vehicle maintenance, and inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations continue to contribute to avoidable road disasters across Nigeria.

Residents of the Sangotedo area have called on authorities to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and enforce stricter compliance with safety standards, especially along high-traffic routes such as the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

Call for Caution

LASEMA urged motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic laws to prevent similar occurrences.

The agency assured the public that further updates would be provided as investigations continue and recovery efforts progress.
