The Federal Government has announced plans to commemorate the 74th birthday of Bola Ahmed Tinubu with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Abuja, in a move aimed at reinforcing national solidarity with citizens facing hardship.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, disclosed that the initiative is designed to reflect the compassion-driven leadership style of President Tinubu and underscore the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance.
President Tinubu, who clocks 74 on Friday, March 29, 2026, will be honoured through a humanitarian outreach rather than a purely ceremonial celebration, a decision the Minister described as both symbolic and impactful.
According to Dr. Doro, the Ministry deliberately chose to spend the day with displaced persons as a way of drawing national attention to the plight of millions of Nigerians affected by conflict, natural disasters, and insecurity across the country.
He explained that the visit to an IDP camp in Abuja would provide an opportunity for direct engagement with displaced families, enabling government officials to share in their experiences, offer support, and strengthen trust between affected communities and public institutions.
“The decision reflects the spirit of compassion, inclusion, and service that underpins Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. It is a reminder that governance must be people-centred, especially for those most in need,” the Minister said.
Dr. Doro further noted that the celebration aligns with the Federal Government’s broader humanitarian strategy, which focuses on improving the welfare of vulnerable populations while pursuing sustainable solutions to displacement.
He highlighted ongoing efforts by the Ministry to work with local and international partners to enhance humanitarian response systems, expand access to basic services in IDP camps, and promote long-term recovery through livelihood restoration and community reintegration programmes.
The Minister stressed that beyond immediate relief, the government remains committed to creating conditions that would enable displaced persons to return safely to their homes or rebuild their lives in stable environments.
He added that the outreach would also serve as a platform to evaluate current interventions and identify gaps in service delivery, with a view to strengthening policy implementation across affected regions.
Calling on Nigerians to embrace the spirit of the occasion, Dr. Doro urged citizens to mark the President’s birthday by extending acts of kindness to the less privileged in their communities.
“Celebrating Mr. President should go beyond well wishes. It should be an opportunity to demonstrate compassion, unity, and shared responsibility toward building a more inclusive society,” he stated.
The Minister also revealed that prayers would be offered for President Tinubu, seeking divine guidance, wisdom, and strength as he continues to lead the country through its socio-economic transformation agenda.
Observers say the planned engagement signals a shift toward more socially conscious public celebrations, where national milestones are leveraged to spotlight pressing humanitarian challenges and inspire collective action.
With millions of Nigerians still displaced due to insecurity and environmental crises, the initiative is expected to draw renewed attention to the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address displacement and support affected populations across the country.
