In a significant breakthrough for Nigeria’s aviation sector, United Nigeria Airlines has officially joined the International Air Transport Association Multilateral Interline Traffic Agreement (MITA), marking a major leap in its transition from a domestic carrier to a globally connected airline.
The development, confirmed under ADMIN/INTERLINE/4811, follows the airline’s successful compliance with PSC Resolution 780—one of the critical benchmarks required for participation in global interline frameworks. This milestone effectively integrates United Nigeria Airlines into a network of hundreds of international carriers operating under IATA, enabling seamless cooperation across multiple airlines.
According to the airline’s Public Relations Officer, Chibuike Uloka, the MITA admission represents a strategic turning point in the airline’s long-term expansion plan. He explained that the agreement empowers the airline to enter interline partnerships with global carriers, allowing passengers to travel across different airlines using a single ticket while enjoying coordinated baggage handling and smoother transit connections.
“This is more than just a regulatory approval—it is a gateway to global operations,” Uloka stated. “It validates our operational standards and aligns us with international best practices, positioning us to deliver a truly connected travel experience.”
With the MITA framework in place, United Nigeria Airlines is expected to significantly expand its route offerings by leveraging partnerships with established global airlines. This means passengers can now book journeys that originate on United Nigeria Airlines and connect seamlessly to international destinations through partner carriers without the complexities traditionally associated with multi-airline travel.
Aviation analysts note that this development enhances the airline’s competitiveness, not only within Nigeria but across the African aviation landscape. It also strengthens the country’s connectivity to global markets, a critical factor for trade, tourism, and economic growth.
Beyond passenger convenience, the MITA admission is also expected to boost inbound traffic, as international travellers can now connect to Nigeria more efficiently through interline arrangements. This positions United Nigeria Airlines as a more attractive option for global travellers seeking access to Nigeria’s key cities.
Industry stakeholders see this as a strong endorsement of the airline’s operational integrity and safety standards, given IATA’s rigorous compliance requirements. It also signals readiness for future strategic alliances, including potential code-sharing agreements and expanded regional operations.
As United Nigeria Airlines continues to scale its footprint, the MITA milestone underscores its ambition to become a major player in Africa’s aviation ecosystem—bridging domestic strength with global reach while enhancing the overall passenger experience.
