United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has committed ₦20 million over the next 10 years to sustain the prestigious Chinua Achebe Prize for Fiction, administered by the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), in a landmark intervention aimed at securing the future of one of Nigeria’s most important literary honours.
Under the sponsorship arrangement, the airline will provide ₦2 million annually for the next decade, bringing its total commitment to ₦20 million.
The commitment was disclosed by the airline’s Executive Chairman, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, following discussions with the President of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Dr. Usman Akanbi.
The long-term sponsorship is expected to provide greater financial stability for the annual prize and reduce its vulnerability to changes in government policy, political administration or public funding priorities.
UNA Steps In to Rescue Prestigious Literary Prize
The intervention comes against the backdrop of funding challenges that have threatened the continuity of the Chinua Achebe Prize for Fiction in recent years.
The prize was established in 2021 by the Anambra State Government in collaboration with the leadership of the Association of Nigerian Authors, as part of efforts to preserve the legacy of the late literary icon and celebrate outstanding Nigerian fiction writers.
The administration of former Governor Willie Obiano commenced the sponsorship with an annual contribution of ₦1 million.
Following the change of administration in 2022, the government of Governor Chukwuma Soludo continued the sponsorship and subsequently agreed to increase the annual contribution to ₦2 million, following an appeal by ANA that the original amount was no longer adequate in view of inflation and rising administrative expenses, including payments to members of the judging panel.
However, according to the organisers, the state government’s sponsorship was not sustained after two years despite repeated correspondence and reminders from the association.
The resulting funding uncertainty raised concerns about the continued existence of the annual prize.
It was against this background that United Nigeria Airlines stepped forward with a decade-long commitment.
‘Achebe Is Too Precious to Suffer Epileptic Funding’
Explaining the decision to intervene, Dr. Akanbi quoted Professor Okonkwo as saying that the literary icon was too important to Nigeria and Africa for the prize established in his honour to be subjected to unstable funding.
“Prof Achebe is too precious in our consciousness for the award to continue to suffer the current epileptic funding.”
Professor Okonkwo said the airline’s decision was driven by the need to protect and perpetuate the legacy of one of Africa’s most influential literary figures.
He described Achebe as one of the very few men and women of letters and culture in recent history whose works and public interventions brought enormous attention and honour to Africa and the black race.
According to him, Achebe’s influence extended beyond his novels to his lectures, speeches, intellectual activism, ethical conduct and interventions in Nigeria’s political and social affairs.
He described the late author as an “authentic conscience of the Nigerian people,” whose contribution to literature and public discourse continues to resonate globally.
ANA Applauds United Nigeria Airlines
Reacting to the sponsorship, the ANA President, Dr. Usman Akanbi, expressed profound appreciation to Professor Okonkwo and United Nigeria Airlines for what he described as a patriotic intervention.
Akanbi, a senior academic at the University of Ilorin, said Achebe’s contribution to Nigerian literature went far beyond his internationally acclaimed books.
He also recalled Achebe’s historic role in the establishment of the Association of Nigerian Authors in 1981 at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he accepted to serve as the association’s pioneer president.
According to him, Achebe’s leadership helped provide ANA with the credibility and foundation that enabled it to grow into an organisation respected both within Nigeria and internationally.
Okonkwo’s Growing Achebe Legacy Campaign
The ₦20 million sponsorship represents the latest in a series of initiatives by Professor Okonkwo and United Nigeria Airlines aimed at preserving and celebrating the legacy of Chinua Achebe.
Akanbi specifically highlighted Professor Okonkwo’s sustained personal commitment to keeping Achebe’s memory alive.
He noted that Okonkwo was solely responsible for financing the erection of a statue in honour of the late literary icon, which was unveiled in July by Governor Chukwuma Soludo at the Ugwunwasike Roundabout in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, Achebe’s hometown.
The initiative was seen as another major public recognition of Achebe’s contribution to literature, Nigerian identity and African cultural expression.
Achebe’s Name Takes to the Skies
Professor Okonkwo’s tribute to Achebe has also extended to the airline’s fleet.
In June, United Nigeria Airlines named one of its two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft after Chinua Achebe.
The second aircraft was named after His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha.
The decision to name the aircraft after the two prominent figures, according to the airline, reflects Professor Okonkwo’s determination to honour personalities whose lives and values have contributed significantly to Nigerian society.
A New Chapter for the Chinua Achebe Prize
The latest sponsorship could mark a significant turning point for the Chinua Achebe Prize for Fiction.
Rather than relying primarily on annual government appropriations or the goodwill of successive administrations, the 10-year commitment provides ANA with a predictable funding framework for the prize.
It also demonstrates how private-sector institutions can play a strategic role in preserving Nigeria’s literary heritage, particularly where public funding becomes uncertain.
For ANA, the intervention is not merely about financing an annual award. It represents an opportunity to ensure that a prize bearing the name of one of Africa’s greatest writers continues to recognise new generations of fiction writers.
For United Nigeria Airlines, meanwhile, the commitment positions the carrier beyond its core aviation business and places it firmly within efforts to promote Nigerian literature, culture and national heritage.
With the ₦2 million annual commitment guaranteed for 10 years, the Chinua Achebe Prize for Fiction now has a stronger financial foundation from which to continue celebrating literary excellence and extending the enduring legacy of the man whose works helped redefine how Africa told its own story to the world.
